Recover user password

Hi So i have a bit of an issue atm. My friend has and old hard drive of his thats password locked, he forgot the password. He wants to have to the password to get old photos or something idk. Point being, is there anyway I can recover the password? Im running windows 10 and have the hard drive connected to my desktop, is there a file I could access that would reveal the password? Thanks you the help!!!

Its very easy to reset the password, use a password reset disk or something like kali linux. 

 

Getting the password as plain text is much harder, and normally needs brute forcing, and can be almost impossible.
