So, I just finished my new build and after using it for a couple of hours I started to hear a strange sound that would start and stop. It sounded kinda like a cable interfering with a fan. I checked that no cables were interfering with fans and they weren't. I suspect the problem is due to the psu not getting enough air through the bottom of my case but I am not sure. I have a NZXT S340 elite case and a Corsair CX500 PSU. Another idea I had was that my PSU isn't high enough wattage as it is 500w but I have an 8600k oc to 4.7GHz at 1.35v, a cryorig h7 quad lumi, asus strix 1070, ssd, hdd, and 4 case fans. Overall I'm not sure what the issue is and was looking for some help. Thanks

If you have your PC on a flat surface such as a desk or a laminate floor, the airflow theory is out of the question. It would be a different story if you're laying your PC on carpet flooring.

As for your PSU wattage assumption, it should still be able to run with a 4.7GHz 8600K and a 1070, I can't imagine that's not enough for it.

I currently have it sitting on my desk and when I take the back side panel off the noise seems to stop which is why I am somewhat confused

Is it possible that there are cables being squeezed by the pressure of the rear side panel? Naturally you'd have the bulk of your cables stored in the PSU shroud of the NZXT S340 anyway.

Do you notice any loose cables or other possible stray objects when removing the panel?

I have lots of cables smashed by the tight fit of my back panel, doesn't cause any issues.

The only cables that are not routed through the build in cable management are the cpu power cable which goes across the back of the MB and the hd audio cable which passes by the PSU. All the other excess cables are put between the PSU and hard drive cage.

Maybe your back panel isn't attached properly, causing rattles when the table shakes or due to suction from the fans

I have removed and put the side panel on several times and just checked that it is installed correctly so I don't think that would be the problem. Also the sound only happens sometimes and seems to come from the PSU region of the case.

Maybe the PSU fan is just faulty then

Edit: or the PSU isn't assembled properly and there's an internal component that's bumping the fan

It's probably your PSU in that case. (no pun intended)

I would suggest getting a replacement, and for peace of mind, maybe get a 550W PSU just to have that extra gap of headroom.

Nah. You don't need 650W. Get a 600W PSU and you should be fine.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

PSU calculators are useless and overestimate by a ton. He's closer to 250W

Both are way overkill anyway.
