NVIDIA New Lineup?

D3monw3st

Hello,

I'm currently in the market for making my very first PC. I've been a Mac user my entire life, and the 5k iMac is just complete trash. Trying to use a mobile gpu to power a 5k screen I can barely do anything on it. I've set a budget around 1.7-2k for a new computer and have came up with a few builds. Each build features a GTX 1080 TI and a variant of some sort: ASUS, Gigabyte, etc. I've been scouring around for a place that has them in stock, and it seems Amazon will be the earliest retailer to have one in stock which'll be in a few days. Before I pre-order my card, should I hold off? I've seen people posting about Nvidia's new lineup, and it's been roughly 2 years since the last "refresh" of the GeForce lineup.

What do you guys think?
How long will it take, and is it in by interest to wait?

Thanks,
D3monw3st

New lineup was said to come in July 30, but I assume availability will be so low and prices will be so high, it wont be a reasonable buy until the very end of the year at least.

Some news sites say that they are going to launch as early as July, Some say they August. No one knows definitively but if you can hold off until then it might well be worth it. But again, we can't realy know how the pricing for the new cards will be, and how the old card prices will change.

I don't think you would lose anything by waiting, but be prepared to pay a premium for a new card on launch. If your objective is to get the best of the bets, and money isn't realy a huge deal then holding off for another month or two would definitely be worth it. But if your objective is to spend a similar amount then expect to wait a lot longer until supply reaches the demand for the cards.

With how crazy card prices have strayed from their MSRP, you might be better off just getting a 1080 ti now if you realy need a PC built. Also something to note that if you live in the US, it will be much easier to get your hands on a card at launch than it is in EU, Australia or Canada. Here in the UK it was a good few weeks after the 1080 launch that Amazon listened the card. and another month or so before they weren't out of stock more time than not.

Personally, if you don't realy need the computer now and you are willing to wait until maybe like september where you actually stand a chance of getting the card and you are prepared to potentially pay much more than MSRP, then waiting for the 1180 is probably best. But otherwise the 1080ti is available now and performs exceedingly well.

Ah okay, well, I've just basically sold my 5k iMac. So i'm using my laptop, not really in such a urge to game; however, is the 1180 supposed to have insane performance boosts than the 1080 ti? Also, I do live in the US, but i'm not really looking forward to paying a huge premium.

Following Nvidia's performance gains per generation, the 1180 should be on par with the 1080Ti.

And the 1170 will be on par with the 1080, and so forth as you go down the line.

Ah okay, the 1180 will be priced a little cheaper?

No telling, prices might be through the roof.

The last article I read rumored that the 1180 would be priced at 999 USD, and the 1180Ti would MSRP at 1200 USD.

Oh, so then what's the point of it? Just newer architecture?

Newer architecture as well as other performance gains.

Probably more energy efficient as well.

We can only speculate.

Yeah, so shall I just purchase the 1080 TI when it comes in stock? Looks like amazon already raised the prices a bit. The regular clocked GPU is $120 more than when I checked yesterday and $50 more than the OC version (literally makes no sense). I may pre-order the OC version right now to prevent and further price fluctuations.

Pascal overclocks pretty well, I wouldn't worry about getting the factory overclocked version personally.

As long as you've got the power and a good cooler, you should be fine.

not coming until 202x

Nothing coming this year worth buying, its gonna be around Titan V level performance if not slightly better but just as expensive.

Take it up with Nvidia, they've been doing this for years.

Their performance gain per generation usually goes like this:

previous gen xx80Ti = next gen xx80

previous gen xx80 = next gen xx70

previous gen xx70 = next gen xx60

and so forth.

Though with Pascal they sort of broke this trend, with 980 Ti = 1070, 980 = 1060 6GB, and so forth.

Somewhat, yes.

But overall, that's usually how it goes.
