That RAM usage doesn't justify it still being terrible. As I sit typing this, Avast 2014 Free is using less than half what AVG does, and it protects better than AVG.

AVG and avast are very simillar in the way of protection.  AVG isn't terrible.  Its not the best, neither is avast.  The same goes for every antivirus.  The problem I have with Avast is that if you start using windows, Avast pounds the CPU hard!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpxAkPddbDA  Though Avast and AVG are very similar in protection the sandbox was removed from avast in the latest version btw.

if Windows defender works for you don't feel stressed to use AVG.  If you feel you need more, go ahead.  I'm not telling anyone to dump what they have and use AVG.  I just get annoyed when people say AVG is horrible because it really isn't, AVG has been getting that blame all the time and I get put down because I have recommend AVG!

I still have sandboxing in the latest version... And that's why you set Avast to load after everything else.

Oh, well I didn't notice.  As I said before I'm not telling anyone to only use AVG. Avast is also good, but I just hated it when you said AVG was terrible, because AVG really isn't that bad.  Good choice for Avast anyways.

Good! You can change the advanced settings and make AVG totally crazy and catch pretty much everything.  You can also enable detection of Enhanced PUPs to block those hidden toolbars in installers.  If you see a bug or anything feel free to tell me and I'll pass it on :)

When I had to use it (back in I think 2007) it was dreadful. But then there's my school, running Symnatech on everything... My computer got infected and went bezerk.

How to not get viruses 101:

1.) Don't click things that look fishy, because on the internet, if it looks fishy, it's fishy.

2.) When installing things, make sure you don't just click the next button 60 times, read and make sure there's no boxes that say "YES I WANT TO INSTALL MCAFEE, THIS, THAT, AND SOME OF THAT TOO"

3.) Don't run things that say "Java wants your permission to run" when the website looks like it was designed by a 2 year old.

BAM

@op good thread :D

I would like to add:

The BANK, DOESNT EMAIL YOU. IT NEVER DOES. IT REALLY REALLY DOESN'T. So don't fall for those fishing / spam mails..

I just don't click on stuff I don't want to and that has solved my problem for nearly 9 years.

Same with me, I still use antivirus software for more peace of mind.

I would like to add its spelt as Phishing, not Fishing.  But you are right.  Most of them are scams however there are some banks that do email.  A good way to avoid this is to get a anti-spam/ anti-phishing application.  The best way however is to NOT sign up for email banking.

what, Microsoft Security Essentials?  Or Windows Defender on Windows 8?  Or just plain old Win7 defender?  All of them are ESSENTIALLY the same thing, win7 defender isn't as up to date as the other 2 however all of their signatures and database come from the same place.  And their signatures aren't bad by any means.   They can certainly handle malware over 5 days old

Good common sense probably avoids 80% or so of infections

Learn to use the computer properly, good anti-virus is obviously a thing you need but common sense is your best weapon against being infected, ''buying a safer car does not decrease the likelihood of you having an accident, learn to be a better driver'' - Carey Holzman (I think) and it is so true.

It is very true. However relating to that saying, if you have a completely crap car the brakes might not work and you'll crash.

Or you could stop downloading suspicious content. Eg. pornography and pirating games. Everytime I try and pirate a game I get a virus so I just gave up and made everything easier by downloading stuff off steam. Literally every time I downloaded a pirated game I got a virus.
