Had my custom loop running for around 18 months now, other than an issue with a dodgy chip, been running great, while playing state of decay today I got a lot of errors from my CPU saying temp critical, all 4 core where at 100C and the GPU was at 93C 7600K which is overclocked but only using the performance mode on my ROG board, and the GPU is a 1070 that I have messed with GPU boost a little to get it over 2ghz (added 3 steps to the top end) temp until today where great, when I went into the BIOS to reset the CPU I noticed my pump wasn't detected, I have now drained the loop and put the pump in its own tiny loop where it just feeds straight back into the loop in case one of the blocks was clogged, does not run, but it does vibrate for about a second, then stop, then repeat over and over, could the motor be stuck? the impeller comes out fine and doesn't look damaged? but will not spin under its own power?

The problem with Custom loops is that you HAVE to do routine maintenance. This includes Cleaning and draining and filling the loop every 4-6 months if you want the best performance, even yearly would be better. Also curious why do a full custom loop setup for a 7600k and not a 7700k? It seems you could have spent money for better hardware then fancy cooling.

It sounds like you may have damaged your pump, and even if you fully clean it, still could be broken.

What pump model and top are we dealing with, including the other components for the loop. If one of the blocks is clogged it's very likely the impeller is stuck or gunked up.

I have cleaned this loop twice in those 18 months, was working great until today.

as for the 7600K over the 7700K, purely as it was a gaming rig so saved the £100, regret it now and might swap one day

Yeah definitely sounds like the pump is stalling.

It may or may not have damaged the circuitry too.

Open it up and see if anything is blocking the impeller, if not then it's fried the circuits and needs to be completely replaced.

I suppose a Pure gaming rig is the best place for an i5, but the amount of money spent on the custom loop and such would have covered that and then some. Its also the only upgrade path on the platform unfortunately.

By cleaning do you mean just Draining and refilling, or do you mean taking apart components for the WC gear and using brushes to clean them?

so I have all EK, DDC res combo going into the 1080/1070 EVGA FTW block into the monoblock for the ROG impact 8 into a 240 rad then back to res.

I don't think either block is gunked as the loop drained perfectly, have not flushed as I can't

I opened it up already, the impeller looks fine, the only thing I didn't was remove the heatsink off of the pump as I just couldn't figure out getting it off...

You can still have build up in the loop along the surfaces, in those 18 months if you never took it apart, I would recommend to do so for inspection. Can you post a photo of the loop and the pump opened we can get a better idea of what might have happened.

It pretty much sounds like your pump is toasted then. It happens, i was making sure it wasnt clogging with debris but if you were cleaning it and it didnt have debris or other stuff it would have been working properly.

Did you pull the impeller out and check the bearing?

DDCs are pretty bad pumps, it's probably dead and needs to be replaced.

Hard to see exactly but is the housing the impeller in damaged? That looks like it must have rubbed up against the surfaces to cause that kind of transferring of material. How high is the impeller sitting in the housing, it should sit up a fair bit higher with the stainless portion above the edge.

Hmm that looks about the same to me, odd where did it come from. No scoring or marks on the housing then?

not that I can tell, unless I am looking at the wrong side? It is still sat in the heat sink housing from EK as I can't figure out how to remove that to check on it

You would just check the inside where you see the white ceramic bearing, if there are any marks on there. Oh now I look at it that might be a mark by someone doing QC as the other photo has a black line also on the stainless portion.

If everything looks clean I'd try giving it another test to see if the pump is working, just be sure to constantly feed it water so it doesn't run dry.

right ya I was looking at the outside, no there are no marks on the inside, I had it running in a little loop which was just the pump res feeding its self, and it just did the on off vibrate again, no circulation, there was a black mark on the impeller body, just it must have been ink or something as it wiped off on my finger with no effort

Hmm that doesn't bode well then, you're probably going to have to get a replacement. Take the pump out of the heatsink it's usually just friction fit and see if any of the electronics let the smoke out.

Take a small screw drive or plastic tool to wedge in the corner you should be able to just lift it out without much difficultly, just don't force it.
