650W vs 550W?

MarTorb

I am looking for a new power supply since it has started making a buzzing noise. I have used different power supply calculators and i got with my current system (i7-4770k and a gtx 1060):

Cooler Masters calculator:

362 load wattage

412W recommended from Cooler master

Be quiet:

277W maximum wattage requirement.

I am also going to be upgrading later down the line and therefore I also tested with a i7-8700k and a gtx 1080ti:

Cooler master:

499 load wattage

549 recommended

Be quiet:

maximum wattage requirement 412 W

I would also maybe like to try my hands at overclocking later. Should I buy a 550W g3 or a 650W g3?

The G3 units have been having some problems so would recommend to stay away from them. As far as wattage, I would go with 650w and be safe with everything.

The G2 is still a great unit. I have a 750w G2 in my system and love it.

You probably won't even go over 300, 350 at a push depending on OC's to be honest.

Even for a 1080ti and 8700k 550 is fine.

Those "PSU calculators" are completely useless, and overestimate by a ton. With a 1080 Ti and 8700K, you're looking at under 400W at load. Add overclocking, and you still have plenty of headroom with a 550W PSU. With a 1060, it's more like 200W under load.

In Norway, the Focus Plus Gold 650W is well priced for whatever reason, being cheaper than the 550W version. Then you have the quieter RM650x, which also ends up cheaper than the 550W version. Then you have the cheaper GQ 650W, whish should be fine.

So 550W would be enough but just buy 650W because of the price? Is there a area where the power supply should be in? For example 60% usage or else you could just buy a 1000W unit?

Yes, because of the price.

The relative load doesn't really matter. But buying a 1000W PSU for a 200W or 400W PC is just a waste of money.
