Friend looking for new CPU, mobo, and ram for recording and editing audio. $1000 max budget. I7 or Ryzen?

Hey guys.

So. My friend is looking to upgrade his 6 year old system for music creation. He has a max budget of $1000 for a cpu, ram, and mobo.

Im purely a gamer so I have no idea on the productivity side of things. He uses Sonar Platinum and Protools 12.

Bette to go with a 2700x or an 8700k?

He is also looking to get 64gb of ram as well.

Im not wellhearsed in the world of audio. Generally speaking the 2700x is regarded as the better productivity chip.

Are we talking CPU, Mobo and RAM only? 1000$ being the budget for that?

Yes. I presume he has a Nas or a bunch of storage on hand. Video card isn't a big must.

Does he have one already or does he not think he needs one? Ryzen doesn't have an igpu so you would need one in either east (the intel hd graphics is shit for anything other than 1 monitor)

Try using the PSU Tier List!

How to reset the bios/clear the cmos

My current rig:

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x

Ram: 1x16gb DDR4, 2x8gb DDR4

Storage: 1tb nvme ssd

GPU: gtx 3080

Monitor: 23.8" Dell S2417DG 144hz g-sync 1440p + 27" Acer S271HL 60 Hz 1080p

Keyboard: ducky one I | I SF

Mouse: gpro wireless | glorious model o2 wireless

Sound : beyerdynamic 1990 pro | Monoprice liquid spark (amp) + topping d10 (dac)

I'd go with that CPU, a decent x470 motherboard and 3200mhz+ 16GB DDR4 Ram

64 GB of ram isnt doable. You would need 1100$. This build is upgradable to 64 Gb but atm is 32GB.

It also has plenty of room for any cooling. The stick cooler will do the jobb well for the moment. The stock cooler is quite competent

He already has his older rig which has one. So I doubt he needs anything updated gpu wise.

Music production doesn't require much RAM as opposed to video production.

I'd spend the extra 16GB Ram money into a 1050ti because the AMD doesn't have intergrated graphics

EDIT: looks like he already has a GPU, so he can spend money on RGB I guess or just not spend it

No reason for the $100 premium for x470 and a 2700x

Not wrong. The 2700x is quite nice though. Dunno what cooler the 1700 has. Might want to dish out on a basic tower cooler

Not bad. Would do a basic 3.8 ghz overclock on the 1700 to utilize it

Why not 2700x vs 1700? I have a spare Crosshair vi x370 board he could use.

He can use either. Just need to update the BIOS on the board

2700x comes pre-overclocked and will run at a slightly higher frequency than the 1700 OCed (assuming 4ghz OC, though it is somewhat unlikely). Roughly 200-350mhz faster depending on the number of cores under load. Not to mention some IPC gains.

One question. Does your friend have a OEM key for his system? If so he would need to get a new key as swapping the Mobo invalidates the OEM key as far as i know
