how often do you upgrade

I was wondering how often people upgrade their parts 

 

monitor/s

cpu (obviously motherboard as well)

gpu 

and then anything else

I only upgrade when I feel I am no longer getting the experience I want in what I do. Until that happens, I am satisfied with what I have.

About every 5 years when it comes to the PC and its hardware. And peripherals every 2 years with monitor only when it dies, so about 6 years.

I have i7 920 bought as new in 2009  I upgraded only to gtx970 from radeon hd4870

I only upgrade when i feel like doing so. 

 

Also ive got AM4. Therefore i dont need mobo upgrade.

 

Also actual worth in the upgrade is something.

Odd to see someone else on from Brisbane!

 

In the 5 years that I've had my PC (since I built it) I have replaced these parts

 

• Monitor once, changed from a 1080p 24" to a 1440p 27"
• CPU never, still on the ancient room heater of a CPU, the i7 4770k
• GPU twice, went from a GTX780 to two 780Ti's then to a GTX1080Ti
• Mobo never
• PSU once, original 550watt died
• Case never
• RAM never
• HDD & SSD never

And in a nutshell, that's it.

monitor: When the old one breaks. Happy with 1080p 144Hz TN and 1080p 60Hz IPS setup I currently have.

 

CPU: Till it breaks or is inadequate.

 

GPU: Every 2 generations.

 

PSU: When the warranty expires

 

Case, SSD, HDD: Till they break

 

Fan: When the motherboard has enough fan headers...

throw in a xeon x5675 or x5650

 

they are great options, and you will instantly notice the extra 2 cores...throw in some decent triple channel RAM and bam.....you're back in business

I went from my old x58 based (I started to notice power supply stability issues and wanted to upgrade)

i7 920 (upgraded to x5650 for a few months)

Asus Sabertooth x58

12GB corsair XMS3 DDR3

GTX760

 

now I'm on an i7 7700k 

MSI z170 gaming carbon

GTX 1070ti FE

16GB (should be 24GB but I lent my 8GB kit to my roommate) G Skill 3200 DDR4

i've got 8 year old Xeon's in my machine. my gpu is a gtx 1050 because i wanted support for DX12 and stuff.

I just bought X5560 fo 5$, when I msg the seller he told me that he will send 2 of them as he doesn't need them  I have 3x 16gb ECC ddr3 so I will have triple channel 48gb  investing in 6 core is like 50$ so I would rather save it and in couple months upgrade to 8th gen

I'd like to upgrade to a 1070 or smth, but I don't have the money for it and I don't actually need it. my PC is running fine, so yeah.. why should I upgrade then?

yeah

 

I bought my z170 system hoping coffee lake would be compatible.........but 7700K will serve me well for probably the next 6-7 years so...oh and the CPU was free cause I got it on giveaway so I cant complain

I don't belive in giveaways

From 1999 to 2016 maybe once every 5 years.  But now the performance gains per 5 years doesnt seem to be as significant compared to back then.
