Apparently some HexCam users also came across this issue.

Have you searched their forum already? There are some threads that have a few different guides - some more successful than others - on how to potentially solve the problem.

Well well well, it's me again. My dad bought a Hexcan diagnostics unit. He figured that because i (kinda) know about computers i'd know how to use it and set it up; needness to say he was wrong. Off of what i've figured out i need a Comm port  or at least find it in my device manager. Has anyone gone through this and know what's wrong?

Thanks

-Dan

That's a car diagnostics tool right?

Insanity is not the absence of sanity, but the willingness to ignore it for a purpose. Chaos is the result of this choice. I relish in both.

Have you installed the latest software?

http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/download/current.php

It can't be updated i think it's a knockoff

I got a sneaky suspicion that uses CANBUS, never been a fan of that. I am scared of it.

Why would you be scared?

You think it’s a knock off or you’re sure?

Otherwise you should go to the knock off manufacturer’s website to see if there is any software you need to download.

It looks legit but it was quite cheap, so i have a suspicion

As I've said, there are some decent workarounds than sometimes appear to work and sometimes not.

Perhaps you should have a look?

It's unlikely to be genuine. Ross Tech offers free software (but limited in ability) for 3rd party cables. Try that.

I have a genuine one I purchased 10~ years ago pictured below. It was around 500$ then, and they still sell for 250-300$ used

More than a cable, it's a dongle to activate the software.

It's a professional level diagnostic tool. Offers all the functionality of the OEM tool. Lots of shops use them. Mine more than paid for itself over the years, offering mods or scans for cash or beer.

I was already thinking what the 'cable' must be made from in order for it to cost that much :P

But you don't own a shop, right? You simply use it for your own?

I don't, but it's saved me hundreds over the years. 90$ a pop for a scan at the dealer pays for this quickly. I have to say that I've owned 8 different VW's over that span of time. (Only 6 were new enough for me to use that cable on though)

I also used it for data logging on my old racecar.

Considering that a Snap-On Modis Ultra costs about $6000 new ($1000 used) it's not a bad deal at all.

My dad manages a large government repair garage, they just bought 10 of these and pay for phone support annually, updates aren't free either. $$$$$

OK, in that case, I completely agree that $ 500 is totally worth the investment.

Mine doesn't look like that, doesn't have the Genuine Ross-Tech thing. Don't you think they updated it within the last 10 years?
