Hi, i am trying to turn my gaming pc to a NAS/media server. I already own a QNAP TS-251+ which i am very happy with the OS and the interface. Web interface is amazing, also i can access my files, QNAP status info via android apps.

So is there anything close to this simplicity? With windows, i need to look for best suitable programs for my needs. From linux based NAS OS, is there anything with a good interface and even android apps?

So your PC will be full-time NAS and won't be used for gaming anymore? There is no software that'll give you the QNAP functionality while running Windows afaik, but a similar system, Xpenology could prove useful to you. It's Synology DSM for non-synology hardware.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

i can run windows full time as NAS and play gaming.

i can install unRaid and windows via VM as main OS (i dont know if i can do that in freeNAS)

in Xpenology, can i assign a VM to run as main OS when the computer starts? like Linus did with unRaid ? i will check the interface

thanks

In the Unix world there are thing that provide a lot of similar functionality.  Such as..

FreeNAS, Nextcloud, Syncthing, Tarsnap, Emby / Plex, Jails / Bhyve. (Bhyve does support Windows guests)

Pretty much you can get the same, if not better functionality.. Most of those have Android apps. (Nextcloud has really great apps) The difference is they aren't a complete integrated solution so you'll have to implement it yourself.. but on the flipside they also don't cost anything (with the exception of Tarsnap / Emby Premier)
