i don't see why you couldn't. it would essentially become a blank 500GB drive with absolutely nothing on it. You'll want to make sure that you boot directly to your existing HDD from BIOS however.

Yeah just go into BIOS with the drive plugged in and remove it from the boot priority list.

Then use windows disk management to delete the partitions on it and make a new simple volume.

it will show up as a bootable drive when you hook it up to your PC and power it on. AT THAT TIME, make sure your SSD is the boot drive.
