Okay so I've made two other threads about this (not exactly, one was for mobo help and a pc build I wanted to do, but nobody gave me direct answers). So I'm hoping this could be my last one...

So I want to build a gaming pc, yes? Yes.

I'm going to buy a gtx 1050 ti / 1060 3gb card(s), but I need help selecting a CPU that can keep up (no bottleknecking or performance loss). I am not that educated in CPU world, and I need someone to help me find a CPU that is not really out dated, but one that isn't skylake. Reason being, I heard skylake doesn't support traditional ddr3 ram, (Correct me if im wrong). I need someone to find me a CPU that still support ddr3 ram. I want the CPU to be less than 130-150$ and comes with the stock cooler. I also want the CPU to be the best bang-for-my-buck, if not I want something like a pentium or i3 that I can upgrade later on in a few years... I don't care what CPU you guys offer me as long as you believe it's the absolute best, but all I require is that it support ddr3 because I don't want to have to re-buy RAM sticks, it's so freaking expensive these days.

Also if you could find me an ATX or m-ATX mobo that would be awesome too (need to have 4 dimm slots, because I have 4x 2gb sticks that I want to repurpose.)

Note: I'm not here for the "Use google or google can help you with that", I don't know how to compare cpu performance vs dollar ratio. If I did I wouldn't be here, please try to help me, It's my first time building a PC from hand. Thank you.

If DDR3 is important to you, the best you can do is Intel's Haswell platform. If you want to use the system for gaming for another while, you'll need a 4c/8t CPU as that's the best what's available.

Options include:

- i7-4770 (and K for overclocking)

- i7-4771

- i7-4790 (and K)

- Xeon E3 1230 v3 and up

Boards and CPUs for the 1150 platform aren't made anymore which means you should look for 2nd hand deals. If overclocking is irrelevant, look for the H97 chipset. If overclocking is important, the Z97 platform is what you want.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

Hi!

Seeing how the CPU market lately got a kick by AMD. You would really get the best value by buying the latest generation of Intel / AMD. (unless you look in the second hand market)

The latest generation of these CPU's do require you to buy new DDR4 Ram. Seeing that older DDR3 capable CPU's are still very pricy I would not recommend staying with an older out of date platform just to avoid the DDR4 upgrade.

That being said!

I would go with either the I3 8100 (below your budget or the I5 8400 (a bit above your budget)

Nothing like an i5 are out there? I was thinking in the ranges of pentiums to i5's lol. Also I was thinking about using the amd athlon 4x cpu, I heard it's decent and a budget oriented cpu. Also the amd fx6300?

Hi hello thanks for the information, but I was wondering why are CPUs that use ddr3 more expensive? Also is it really worth it going to buy a whole new set of ddr4 ram ontop of a new cpu? Wouldn't that out-price just buying a ddr3 cpu?

I don't know much so I'm just trying to see my options.

Edit: I heard that the amd fx 6300 /8000 series is a DECENT, i know outdated but decent cpu for the price? am I wrong?

If you really wanna get some bang for your buck, and you do not have any parts yet, you can actually find some really good deals out there.

I wouldn't say it is really worth it, the update from DDR3 to DDR4. The new cpu's just require it sadly.

So yea, the real question is do you have any other parts that you can use for your new build and how important for you is it to stay future-proof?

You don't want a bottleneck, you said. I suppose you could go for an i5-4460 but it bottlenecks a 1060 6GB in games like PUBG, GTA V and BF1. You need more than 4 threads for those ideally. The AMD FX platform and the A-series APUs are all crap and shouldn't be considered.

Okay to be honest, I just want to build a computer, I know what parts go with what, but I am just skeptical on what CPU to buy, I wanted to have a cpu that supported ddr3 it's what I have currently, and I didn't want to have to spend an extra 100$ on 8gb of ram when I already had it laying around.

I understand getting a newer CPU will allow me to upgrade in the future in terms of cpus i3>i5>i7 etc, but I was trying to cut corners.

So what I was thinking was getting a modern i3 CPU that's less than my budget, and getting 4gbs of ram to start off with. I don't know if you're the one who linked me the i3 8100t, but I think if I went with that, and bought generic ram 4gb stick, then that would do. But I honestly just want the best bang-for-my-buck. I am really poor, and this is honestly would be an achievement for me if I could get a PC that I built on my own. I just want to play older titles as New Vegas fallout, black ops 1-2, mw2/3, CSGO, minecraft, gta etc. Maybe a few newer titles, but probably not.

Like I said I wantt something that I could upgrade later on (CPU wise), so I am honestly really picky on what modern-cpu I should buy, I don't know upgradability what soever, whats compatible, or if its even compatible. If you could help me, that would be amazing, Thank you.

Hey mate well ddr3 is ancient at this point of time already if you want a decent upgrade get fx 8300~ sure that will be a nice upgrade but it won't last you that long. Better buy used ddr4 4gb stick it will be enough until you can get 8gb and ryzen 2*** anything that is in your price range after everything. I highly would recommend not sticking to old platform. Better get a cheaper gpu if you are playing on 1080p resolution 1050 ti will be enough for everything and spend thoose 50~ bucks you save on ddr4 ram.

Alright man, Alot of people have suggested this so I'm probably going to buy an i3 or something cheap and get 4gb of ram to start off with.

Well ryzen 2nd gen is also a good choice you could even get apu for now and skip gpu for a while. You could play all the games you mentioned for now on medium settings until gtx 2050 comes out.

True!, do you think getting a ryzen 5 for 150$ is worth it and then I can end up pairing it with a 1050 ti later on? or would a i5 be better in the long run???

It is in my opinion. Because well sure i5 pulls slightly ahead but it costs more and has way worse igpu you probably would only be able to play cs:go and minecraft on its igpu while on ryzens you could play gta 5 no problem. And then when you want to play newest titles just smack gpu in there and you wiil have a pc that can handle anything you trow at it. Also am4 platform will be supported until 2020 so if later in life you want to upgrade you won't need a new mobo you are saving your future money :D

After reading this and your other threads and coming to understand what you want to do with your budget - this is the CPU you def. want:

image.png.42a8506e8aafd4413d593818b5e25c5e.png

Vega11 graphics built in on 4 core chip with hyper threating. Yes you will need new ram, that's a bummer but necessary (2nd hand is cheap though).

I highly doubt that you can do better and still get a decent upgrade in any other case.

Unless it's the ryzen 2200g or 2400g it won't have an integrated gpu and will require you to have a dedicated gpu to work. If you want a ryzen gpu with really good integrated graphics then go for the 2200g or the 2400g. The 2400g is better but the 2200g is quite a bit cheaper if money is a big concern.

Honestly if you have a budget in mind for the cpu motherboard and ram combination it would be easier to try and find the best option of you. If you had an overall budget for the entire build that would be even better. It's easier to get the best bang for your buck build if we can help with the overall build rather than a small portion of it.
