I have a X58 system with a i7 960 OC'd to 3.6 ghz and a gtx1060 and 16GB of corsair vengeance 1600 ram clocked to 1744mhz.

Is it still any good ? and would an upgrade to a 990X and 8GB more ram do any good? or is it time to upgrade ?

With x58 the general recommendation is picking up a xeon (x5675 is currently the most often recommended one) for about 50$ and have the exact same performance and OC-ability as the 990x for much much cheaper. I'm running an E5649 at 4.4 GHz with a 30€ air cooler right now. IF you really want an unlocked CPU (there is no point really) get a w3680, its the exact same CPU as the 980x/990x with ECC support and much cheaper.

So that means that I could put ECC memory on my Sabertooth X58? What benefits would that have for gaming?

You wouldn't get any benefits.

Its not that bad...

And has at least 6 Cores.

 

But you shouldn't look for the 990X except you get a good deal. Look for Xeon E5600 series or X5600 Series instead.

They are basically the same but most likely cheaper.

For Gaming? Nothing.

And you need the more expensive/rarer Unbuffered ECC; registred ECC does not work. I tried ;)

 

If you use the System to store data and other stuff, ECC makes sense as it can correct single Bit Errors and see Multi Bit Errors.

 

Its a shame that its not the Default no more...

It's fine.

 

I had an i7-950 which struggled to OC to 3.9. I now have a Xeon X5675 which happily will do 4.7 running flat out, but runs cooler at 4.5. It hasn't let me down.

 

Is it the fastest out there? No, not even close, but it does well for my use case. I'm held back by GPU rather than CPU to be honest.

 

If you have good cooling then I'd say try the Xeon.
