Depending on your GPU setup. Some GPU configurations can run games at 4K with no problems.

OP: "Too much for a GPU to handle" varies a lot by GPU. My GTX 780 can't handle much past 1080p Medium settings.

even if your GPU can handle 4k, you'll still get lower FPS than 1080p 8xAA

Depends on the game. A 780 could probably play Fortnite 1080 ultra

Not at 60 fps. I'll go test that and let you know what I find :)

There's no Ultra setting in Fortnite, but it crashed in the lobby when I set everything to High.

Since there is no true MSAA x8 on Maxwell/Pascal, I don't see why you have a problem ?
1080p + SSAA 2x2 (or DSR to 4k), will give you about the same performance.
1080p + MSAA x4 + FXAA > 4k performance wise.

Possibly? I dunno, I'm overclocked so essentially matching a 1060 3Gb more or less exactly(running just a bit lower in clock speeds).

It might just be that it's an old card lol

Yeah. Wasn't there some problems with 780 reference boards?

You mean about the cards randomly dying? That article posted in Tech News a while back?

I doubt that's what I'm experiencing. I'll look that up though, there might have been issues that I'm not aware of.

I run my 1050 at epic=ultra 55-65 fps, with 0.1% lows of ~20fps.

Yeah, I've kind of resigned myself to the belief that it's a 1080p Medium card.

Gonna try and replace it later this year with a 1070Ti or 1080.

1080p 8xAA is A LOT easier to run than 4K with no AA.

Might wanna consider a used 980 Ti, those are gonna get real cheap when the 11xx series launches.

Could be. I'd like to have a new card though haha. Or I could go ham and grab that $750 Titan XP I saw on Craigslist assuming it sticks around long enough...

I don't know that I can power a 980Ti SLI. I've only got a 550W unit. I've only got 2 6+2pin VGA power cables.
