My friend bought a prebuilt the came loaded with a ton of bloatware and I have been trying to help him uninstall Idle buddy. I have found a bunch of websites that say to download other programs but I feel that those programs are likely viruses as well. could someone please recommend a reputable website/program/method of uninstalling this program?

Thanks

There was a pretty good, pretty short description on the microsoft forum:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/apps_windows_10-winapps-appscat_entertainment/uninstall-idle-buddy/a5f86d5e-7e7f-42c8-a272-0c1a1eaed014

I can't tell whether it will work that way but malwarebytes is most likely the way to go as idle buddy is classified as malware, not a PuP.

Malwarebytes finds it, kills it and you can easily unistall malwarebytes afterwards if you don't want it. Just make sure to run a scan before uninstalling malwarebytes as you'll get a free trial of mbam pro anyway and it helps tracking down leftovers from programs like McAffee and Idle Buddy that those use to reinstall themselves after you tried to purge them.

I've heard of machines shipping with "Potentially Unwanted Programs" or adware, and with things like Lenovo Superfish which was spyware, but coin mining badware on a prebuilt is a new one for me. An unfortunate if not entirely unexpected sign of the times where manufacturers can apparently get away with this.

My advice to anyone who ever gets infected with malware is that they can never trust their machine again until they flatten and reformat completely. I'd recommend the same to you, grab the windows 10 media from Microsoft and reinstall.

I'd just do a Windows reinstall. Backup important files if possible and do a full reinstall so that your only installing Windows (or whatever OS you want).

It's likely that that's not the only garbage on that prebuilt.
