Hi guys!

I've just received BF4 as a Christmas present, installed it all, started playing on multi-player and it was unplayable, even on the lowest settings I could not play it at all, fps is way to low, to play comfortably. So I thought, I'd better load up the single player see if its the same story, its not, its smooth, even on medium its completely playable compared to multiplayer, with an occasional dip which is hardly noticeable, maybe a couple of fps, not much really, but its nothing I cant live with. So my main question is, which component is creating the horrific performance for multi-player, my CPU or GPU? Which needs upgrading the most?

Specs:

Motherboard - Asus M5A97

CPU - AMD FX-4170

GPU - GTX 560ti

Ram - 16gb Kingston DDR3 1600mhz

If you need any more specs then please let me know!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Its playable to the extent that I can run around and I know what im doing but with constant jitter and lag spikes, gunfights are a no go, and that was on a server with a couple of people... not even full, or is it still CPU?

BF4 was playable when I had a 955BE and a R6950 on low settings, so it may really be either. Did you try updating your drivers? Maybe try upgrading the GPU since quadcores are still sufficient despite showing signs of age.

Have you tried changing Resolution? i had the same signs and symptoms but works fine now.

Is your cpu unparked? If not unpark it and overclock it, overclock the gpu too, and who the heck would buy 16 gigs of ram with that build xD.

A guy that I know built it for me, and he just recommended that the more ram you have the better haha, it was built about 2 years ago :P

Sell those 8 gigs and spend it into new graphics card, maybe a 7870 ghz edition, unpark your cpu if you don't know how to do it, just call me :D

I'd say CPU. I have average fps of 60 with 560Ti and 4770K, settings are low-med.

Thanks everyone, which CPU would you recommend me getting then? 4670k? 8350? (ive heard that the fps with the 4670k and the 4770k is pretty much the same)

Well i'm considering those 2 CPUs as well but just waiting for mantle and check if its really a good choice to pick the 8350.

That FX 4x00 CPU bottlenecks much weaker cards than 560Ti in BF4.

A Phenom II x4 @ 3,6 GHz bottlenecks a HD 7770 in that game.

Well for the CPU i heard it will improve on using more cores like the 8 Cores of the 8350 more effecient , and will also improve the performance from AMD cards.

Correct me if I'm wrong

I knew it would improve the GPU, I just never knew it would improve the CPU's with 8 cores.... may have to take that into consideration, damn you Chiko ;) so many variables!!!

No, Mantle is GPU bound - does nothing to/for the CPU. But with better GPU resources scheduling it decreases some (minor) load on the CPU cuz it utilizes the GPU better.

And for what I'm trying to say -> you would get more performance out of that card if you had a stronger CPU.

If your GPU usage goes up to 80% that means with no bottleneck (100%) you would have 20% higher FPS on the same settings and a lot less framedropping.

Try playing your BF4 with 58+ people on server while monitoring your GPU ussage in MSI Afterburner or some similar tool.

People, you aren't giving correct information, FX 4170 ISNT a bottleneck, if you don't believe me, you will believe the guy who does test this stuff in compute industry for 20 years, i present you, the JayZ2Cents :

Watch the video!

What im trying to say is that bottlenecking a gpu is very hard these days, and even if it did, it would be just minor, i searched for fx 4170 benchmarks and it needs just mostly minor overclocks to 4.2 ghz for it to sometimes beat i5 4670k ingame, there is somethhing that OP missed, the OS, he should upgrade to windows 8.1 if he didn't, drivers, he should update every single one, overclocking ofc, and tweaking the game itself which you can find a tutorial for on google.
