I've heard that the Pixel 2 XL's screen issues have largely faded away thanks to production refinements, but I don't own one and can't speak from experience.  The only reason I'd hesitate to get one is simply that a new version is likely coming in September or October, but if you can get a good deal on a Pixel 2 XL now, there's no point to waiting.

Thanks I think I will go for the pixel XL 2

I have been looking into smartphones for a little while now and its about time I upgrade. Any recomendations? I am am currently looking at samsung galaxy s8, s9, pixel 2. Anything I should know? If you have said phone would you buy it again/recommend it? I am open to other phone brands as well.

This depends on a lot of factors, but generally I'd say a Pixel, iPhone, or Samsung s8 or s9. Realize that with a Samsung, you'll probably never get android updates pushed to your device and bixby still exists (I think). The OnePlus 6 just released, I haven't looked up anything about it but maybe check it out. I'm currently waiting for the Pixel 3 so I can upgrade from my iPhone 5s. If you want to keep your phone as long as possible, iPhone.

Before I give suggestions, I should ask a few questions:

How important is the camera to you?

Do you want a large screen, or do you want something more mid-sized?

Are you attached to Android, or willing to try iOS?

How important are timely OS updates?

That'll likely narrow things down a bit.

timely OS updates are really important. I want usb type c for certain. i would prefer mid to large sized screen, i will only get an android device. I don't care too much about camera. Budget is of no concern. I am leaning towards pixel xl 2, but the screen issues seem to be a little bit of a concern.

I have a Pixel 2. It owns my soul. AMA.

Might want to wait until tomorrow to ask, though. I'm tired.

have you experience any screen issues like some people have?

they are still suporting the 3/3t as far as i know, but they may be a little late on the version updates compared to google and samsung

doesn't samsung just cut off support for their phones after like a year or two though?

The compare against samsung or google wasnt for how long, but how fast they bring the updates out of the newest versions

yeah, but is it true? I don't really plan on upgrading phones till I really need to, so continuous updates would be really nice. I am in college so I want the phone to be able to last me as long as possible, so having timely updates/continuous support is kinda needed for me.

Its what you mean by support or updates. A lot of phones will give you about 2 years of new versions, but for example, I am using a huawei p8 lite with android 6 and for me it runs completely fine

if I went for a samsung galaxy s series phone would it be worth going for the s9 verus the s8? I don't care about pictures that much... What do you think? If you were to buy a new phone today what would you get?

If you look at the phone without the camera, the s8 would probably be worth the price against the s9, but it will have shorter os support. I personally care a little more about the camera and would go for a p20 or a oneplus 6, if you can even get a huawei.

The screen issues are for the Pixel 2 XL, which does have a shitty, problem ridden LG display. The Pixel 2 screen is solid.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

In that case, it basically comes down to a Google Pixel 2 XL.  Essential is pretty good about updates (that's easy when you don't have too many buyers), but most other Android vendors are pretty lousy.
