Hi guys,

So here's my issue, my parents are foster carers and we currently have children in care with us, we have reason to believe that one of them is using Snapchat, which would normally be absolutely fine, however we have been told that he has been using it inappropriately and we want to make sure these things are actually happening before we take it further, he denies even having a Snapchat account, so I was wondering, is there a way to check what apps are being used by what devices over my home network, I have downloaded fing but I can't seem to do anything like this,

Help would be much appreciated guys,

BisquTz

Depends on the router, some have logging functions for parental controls, but generally speaking for the users privacy and peace of mind no. If that were the case probably the best option would be to go into the router/modem settings and enter snapchat, or other such words into the parental control's list of blocked words, and then if you desire to access it yourself download a VPN like PIA and pay a monthly service, or get a slow free one like Opera VPN, now this is not an end all be all solution, if this kid downloads a VPN he can still get through, but it is much easier to crack down on finding a VPN than a website like Snapchat if you have access to their phones. OR you could totally go orwellian with surveillance equipment like he went to test Wi-Fi security.

I am sure there will be people here that would help you more than me but my recommendation is that you could possibly 'sniff' the traffic between the router and device and identify sources but that might be hard to do because it may be encrypted or it would come up with something like the Google Cloud where Snapchat is hosted at.  With my network, I use something called deep packet inspection and even then Snapchat doesn't appear there

I would recommend you to get the Disney Circle solution, you can monitor application use (Snapchat is listed) and block it or assign use times or limit use to certain time. I got myself a Netgear Nighthawk AC2300 router which has Disney Circle embedded, but there is proprietary equipment from Disney as well as other hardware manufacturers.
