Hello all. So, I work as a restaurant manager, and recently we got some upgrades to our POS (Point of Sale, although ask anyone that has worked the restaurants, and they'll tell you the other meaning for POS DOES in fact apply here) system. Anyway, I managed to nab a couple of them from the store (with permission from the owner, of course). So, anyway, I would like to make one of them an HTPC of sorts. My thought is, I want it to be something I can leave on the kitchen counter, so my family has something they can watch while doing dishes, cooking, and so on. I figured out how to get Windows 10 on it, and even managed to get working drivers for the touchscreen. (It's a PAR EverServ 6000, originally running Windows XPE on a Celeron M 530, 2GB of DDR2, and a 160GB HDD). I know it's not exactly high end (hell, it got a score of 35 on Cinebench, don't ask me how I know that. >_> ) But I figure I could possibly get it working to play video. What would be the best software/OS to use for this old pos POS?

Ubuntu or old windows versions like XP. These use less power to run.

Yes, that's true, but I also want to be able to use the touchscreen, and use more modern services like..god idk, Plex, or Kodi? But what would be best considering the touchscreen?

Ubuntu MATE would be first thing I'd try on it, no way Win10 is a good idea in any form

Okay...it has an Elo touchscreen. How would I go about finding the drivers for it on Ubuntu?

id run some Linux distro on it, not sure what id pick but something fairly light

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

I've never tried that scenario, but a quick search shows several solutions that look promising. What I can say is that even Windows 7 will struggle to run on that hardware without significant "stuttering".

It actually handles Windows 10 fairly well. It struggles when I open any apps...as the OS itself uses 60% or more of the RAM alone. Kind of wanting to upgrade it to 4GB, but yeah, my biggest thing is wanting to keep the touchscreen working

Maybe a look here? I dont know Ubuntu well, but I do know that these cheaper devices use basic touchscreen control which means they often work with the most basic tutorials in setting them up.

I actually have the same model par system as you. I've managed to get it up and running again but I would recommend that you only install Windows 7. Par supports their systems and has the driver's listed for download on their site. Be advised that the 64 bit operation system will present many issues first of all with the realtek sound driver's. Even the driver's for the touchscreen are available. Https://Support.partech.com/terminals.php
