A friend needs a laptop for school. Will not be used for gaming. $500 budget. Suggestions?

Start printing money? Laptops are really expensive if you want one thats any good

Just a smidgen over 500 but is a great value. I got one 2 months ago and it's a great all rounder (currently studying CS). Has an open memory and an M.2 slot (to go with the included SATA 2.5" drive) for upgradability down the road.

You won't get anything decent with this budget. Closest one is Acer Aspire 5. Vivobooks generally have mediocre build quality, mediocre-OKish battery life, OKish input devices and entry level IPS/poor TN display.

Still suggesting used business laptops

does it have to be new? you can get old business class laptops with core i5's (thinkpads, HP EliteBooks) for €250/300 here ($299/$358). i don't know if the pricing on the used market here is like the US, but if it is, get one of those and put an ssd in it.. done.

This one does look like a good value. Does it have a touchscreen?

It sadly doesn't. But it does have a 1080P display (matte display may I add) and a finger print reader for Windows Hello if your friend is into that.
