What do I upgrade to get better FPS?

Hello all,

I play Rainbow Six: Siege with i5 7500 and RX 580 but I am not satisfied with the frames I am getting on low graphics. I want to stream as well, but when I do I get around 80 FPS. My current budget is around $300, so my question is, what do I upgrade? To i7 7700 or i7 8700 (new mobo is necessary for that). Or should I save up and get a new GPU? I know for streaming the CPU needs to be great, but when I don't stream I still get only around 110 FPS (I'd like to have 144), so this could be GPU related. What do you guys advice?

Thanks in advance,

Vincent

Siege is a heavy CPU bound game... hell it nearly maxes out my 1800x. Definitely upgrade your CPU/platform. Probably better off going with a 2700x if you want to start streaming as AMD chips perform better in multi threaded loads vs Intels 8700k.

I feel like you should get more FPS... The 580 is a beast, 4gb or 8gb? The 7500 shouldn't be an issue

Don't really want to go AMD CPU because my personal preference for Intel. Thanks for your advice!

I feel like i should have more as well, my setup isn't the most budget setup out there. I have 8gb version of RX 580.

Just read that you stream... Look for a used 7700(k) or 6700(k)

You don't think it's worth to save up for i7 8700?

A 2700X will not do him any good in CPU heavy games, higher per clock and per core performance is what he needs, in which case Intel is king there.

OP I'd look for a i7 8700 (non K) for your needs , it will be more than enough for streaming and has great performance.

The limiting factor here is likely going to be the CPU. When you are in a game, what does your CPU usage look like? I can almost promise it to be pegged at or near 100% usage.

Thanks for advice! May I ask why you don't recommend the 8700k version?

oh I do, if you have the budget go for that (but also factor in a delid) and you can get 5ghz comfortably and have the best CPU on the market :)

Yes it's 95-100% CPU usage because of 100% CPU bug in Siege, common issue

I recommended the 2700x because he wants to stream. The 2700x will beat the 8700K in multi threaded work loads such as gaming/streaming compared to the 8700k.

I don't stream all the time, so it would be great to have excellent frames if i dont stream, plus i have a preference for Intel :).

Actually the 8700K especially when overclocked comes out on top still. Streaming will be the only thing that will benefit from more cores, but they are still slower cores compared to the intel counterpart.

I've done this test back to back before with an R5 1600 @4ghz and my old 6700K @ 4.8ghz, and the i7 was better in every use case bar a few specific programs, in which case it came very close.

8700k is the way to go these days till AMD catches up on IPC.

Pherhaps do you expect me to hit 144 hz constant with i7 8700 and RX 580? Or do I need to upgrade my GPU for that?

Which resolution ? I have a 1080ti and still can't hit 165hz on 2560x1440 on every single game. (Unless i run low graphics but screw that :D)

Yes, intel still rules the roost for IPC and clock for clock speed, but if he wishes to stream, then the 2700x is the better choice. But OP is an intel person and its their money, so they will get what they wish.

Thanks for your explanation. Is it worth it to save up for 8700k with new mobo or should i just get 7700 without new mobo? I'm pretty budget bounded atm

Yes I agree, to be honest it comes down to budget.

If you want best bang for the buck, AMD is impossible to beat at this stage. But if you want the best hardware for the job period, intel has the solution. I hope this changes soon so both companies can bring out more competitive products at lower price points.

I'd save for 8700k if you plan to multitask and keep the PC for a while (3-4 years). It will help you be more futureproof, but the 7700k is a good second choice. (wouldn't go for non K 7700 personally).

According to the video above, with a 4.7ghz 6700k the guy is able to get average of 90+ sometimes 100 fps on Siege on Ultra/V.High, so should be no issue to get 144 on Low with an even more modern CPU.
