How to lower GPU temperature?

jtmoseley

So my 1080 gets straight to 83 degrees as soon as I put it under load. It performs okay, but I also have it mining nicehash when I am not home. So... Is there any way I could lower temperatures? Maybe an airflow case? Ambient temps near me get around 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer...

So... What ways could I lower the temperature? Its a Zotac Amp Edition 1080, and really isn't compatible with liquid cooling in general

Increase the fan speed? It'll increase the noise, but if the goal is just lower temperatures, it should work.

Try crank up the intake fan speeds and take off the front panel first. If temps drop noticeably (while graphics card fan speeds remain the same), then yes you need a new case.

If it doesnt help much, you can use either an aftermarket air cooler, or AIO liquid cooling (not a fully covered waterblock);

Or you can just setup a more aggressive fan curve.

Well I was more going for other ways to keep the temperature down without directly decreasing GPU fan speed... I dunno. Any case recommendations for GPU cooling?

If ambient are at 100f then this is likely the main reason.. Ambient air temps play a HUGE role in cooling. I would recommend you getting an AC in the room where your PC is located. This will likely have the largest impact.

I dunno... I mean ambient in house is probably more like 85 during peak Summer.

I was looking at the G12 bracket from nzxt but I don't think that the amp edition PCB is reference...

I found this waterblock: http://www.performance-pcs.com/bitspower-zotac-gtx-1080-amp-extreme-clear-acrylic-for-zotac-gtx-1080-1070-amp-extreme.html

Not sure if I want to get into liquid cooling... Pretty expensive. If I could use an AIO I'd go for that

How are your case fans arranged?

1 case intake in the front, 2 outtake in the back. Its an older case, so if there are any good air cooled cases that would be an option too. I was wanting a Define R6 White TG but I'm not sure how good it would be for air

Looks like your case has a space for a fan on the bottom. Try adding one there. It should help direct cool air right into the GPU.

OK, I can do that. Any recommended fans?

If you're really low on budget, go for the classic 4 pack of rosewills on amazon. Should be able to fill a couple spaces on the case with them actually.

Really anything should work though. One thing I would recommend doing though is trying to space the fan away from the grille with a stack of washers or something. Fans are a lot quieter if the intake isn't against a grille.

Put some airflow towards the card so it has more air to cool itself with.

Under powering it would help too. At least while mining.
