What internet to get?

Cameron K

So my contract is up with comcast and I want to change up my internet speeds. I host some mc servers and a plex server and my roommate and I game/stream all of the time. My options are 250/12 for $100 or $1000/35 for $130 and would need a $180 DOCSIS3.1 modem for the later. Do you guys think its worth paying more for that speed or does it really matter? My network is all at gigabit speeds with a pfsense router and ubiquiti ap btw.

Well, do you need upload? Because imho 250down is already quite badass. But the 12 up might suck if you are into streaming/YouTube or whatever.

My minecraft and gmod servers use upload as does my plex box. At 12 up I haven't seen many issues but my roommate has been abroad so its only one of us gaming or streaming. I agree 250 is already wicked fast and only maxed if I'm downloading lots.

I'm running on a 400mbps plan with this guy: https://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-SB6190-DOCSIS-Cable/dp/B016PE1X5K/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1525449516&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=modem+sb6190&psc=1

Did they specifically say you need docsis3.1? The SB6190 is supposed to handle 1.4gbps/262mbps.

Anyways, probably not necessary but it sure sounds fun to say you have gigabit internet... I run a couple servers and plex with around 20mbps up right now without issue. Not many users though. Maybe just upgrade later if you run into bottlenecks?

extra $360/year for 4 times the D/L speeds (assuming the host can upload that fast) and nearly tripling the upload link is a pretty good deal.

[FS][US] Corsair H115i 280mm AIO-AMD $60+shipping

Yeah it has to be DOCSIS3.1 unfortunately, I could always upgrade later but its a waste to buy the 3.1 modem and get 250/12 I think. Good to know 20 works for you I may do some stress testing this weekend and see what it looks like.

Yeah and all that coming off of 2/.75 last year and 12/3 currently. Glad to be moving somewhere with ISP options again.

i agree. if that's your use case going forward for the length of the contract, it'll pay off.

Hmm I would go for the $130 plan if you can afford it. And I hope you have DDOS protection on that server.,

1. Go for the 1000/35 if you can afford it

2. Check that you can use your own modem for the gigabit download plan. With Spectrum they hadn't validated any modems aside their own for gigabit so I have a SB8200 doing nothing now since I can't use it. If you can use your own modem and want the SB8200 for like $120 then I'll sell it to you (I'll make a post on the For Sale section soon anyway for it but just a heads up :) )

Yes for Gigabit you need a docsis 3.1 modem. If you need the upload then the gigabit tier is for you, because I think its like 30 Mbps up. While the lower tiers I have seen are about 10 Mbps up.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
