2 quick questions about testing a pc

So I just removed a motherboard and CPU out of a old survalence server.  First do I need any type of storage to acually make sure the system posts?  Also how would I go about turning it on without putting it into a case?  It's a asus board.  4th gen chipset

Current Rig=  AMD Ryzen 9 5900x, Asus Crosshair Hero VIII, EVGA RTX 3070 FTW3 ultra, 32gb Corsair Vengence Pro RGB 3000hz White, EVGA 750 P2 PSU, 1TB Samsung 980 Pro, 500gb samsung 860 evo, 250GB Samsung 850 evo, 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus, 2TB seagate firecuda sshd,  LianLi PC 011 Dynamic XL ROG edition, Corsair h150i elite capelix

You don´t need storage to make sure it posts as far as i know.

Don´t know about the second thing though sorry.

You don't need storage to see if the system POSTs, just a CPU, motherboard, RAM, PSU and a display output (either through the motherboard if it has onboard or the CPU has an iGPU, or through a dedicated graphics card.

To turn the system on without a case, you need to bridge the power_SW pins on the front panel header on the board with something metal (screw driver works well). The two pins that you'd normally connect the power_SW connector from the case to.

Now if I do that will anything happen to the board?  Or anything really?

To turn the PC on without a power button, find the POWER_SW switch on the bottom right of your motherboard, and place a screwdriver head in the middle of them. It should fire up

No, you won't die. Hopefully.

hi.

Nothing different from having it turned on using a power switch on a case. All that the switch does is bridge the pins. You're just doing the same thing.

EDIT: Should note that you should have a CPU cooler as well. While they can run briefly without one, I wouldn't advise it.

It will turn on. Just don't put the mobo on top of metal stuff and it should be OK.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

I typically put the board on top of a phone book before powering it on

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Nothing special. Just don't knock anything while its running. Wrong times twitch could cause issues. Nothing serious, not unless you actually knock capasitor or something like that.
