Hello everyone,
Recently stumbled across some new power settings in the Windows Update (1803).
The new «Ultimate Performance Mode» is only available for Windows 10 Pro Workstation user… but with some cmd commands i got it working on my Windows 10 (1803) Pro machine.

How to:

  1. Open CMD as administrator
  2. Type in: “powercfg -duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61”
  3. Search in windows for “powercfg.cpl”
  4. Double klick on “powercfg.cpl”
  5. Go into power settings and advanced
  6. There is now “Ultimate Performance Mode” available

I’m interested in the performance boost in videogames and heavy workloads… For myself, I found it to increase my performance 1-2%.

I Hope Linus sees this and makes a Video with an in-depth analysis!

Sorry for my bad English…

Have a nice day =^.^=

Game Mode is only impactful on lower-end machines because it gives higher priority to 3D applications, it's not useful at all for high-end rigs :|

All this does is ruin any power efficiency you'd have.

Not everyone cares about it tbh.

yeah. people still buy spaceheaters so they can cheap out on heating during the winter

My house generates energy by itself through solar panels... the energy company actually pays us back so yeah... I'd take a power hungry CPU any day if it gave any meaningful performance boost :P

something tells me you are considering 2 phase sub zero cooling..........

Or if you are doing things on the back and wants to play games smoothly. For example if you are rendering a 3D scenes (or running a time consuming simulation, or rendering a video, etc), and want to allocate your resources to your game, at the cost that your rendering will increase in time to finish.

Shouldn't Windows' scheduler do that on its own, without the need for Game Mode?

"Ultimate Performance Mode" is a power plan in Windows 10 Pro for Workstation.

It's goal is to reduce micro-latencies, at the cost of higher power consumption and increase heat and noise (fans will spin faster).

The power draw for the benefit is not worth it even for gaming systems. Without EXCELLENT cooling, you risk throttling. So while you might have such cooling, most of the people have desktop computers with CPU stock cooler which is not adequate as it assume the CPU to downclock to save power and reduce heat, and can only handle bursts of clock boost. As for laptops, you'll definitely get throttling, reducing system performance, change "Ultimate Performance Mode" to " Ultimate Potato Mode" rather quickly, and potentially cause other problems due to the heat increase. Hence why this power option targets workstations which tend to have over-the-top cooling solution, including fans running at 100% speed all the time, and nothing else. And to ensure that some idiots doesn't cause system damage or experience worst performance only to blame Windows, it is hidden for all editions of Windows beside Windows 10 Pro for Workstation.

This is complicated, as Windows scheduler spreads load among processes, but also the program can give up its time, or request more time, and change its process priority. Windows has this very complex scheduler (like any modern OS), and it needs to manage all this, while ensuring no process starves (never gets CPU, or near that). Also, it doesn't know what is a game or not. Doesn't mean that a program using OpenGL or DirectX is a game. 3D Studio Max, for instance, which can use either, doesn't need Game Mode. Nor does your video player that support hardware acceleration.

What a waste of energy for no real reason.

get off your white horse mate, I just said I do my own energy, which is a clean energy nothing like your typical European polluting coal plants. ;)

Well I’m using an Overlocked 7700K at 5GHz anyway, but new hardware consumes way less power than older generations (550W PSU currently in use). For me power efficiency is secondary to performance.
The main reason is that “Game Mode” on Windows is made for low end systems… And I want to squeeze out every single FPS I can get out of my CPU and GPU. By the way my max. Temp is 78 degrees Celsius during long game sessions, so temperature is not a problem.
I found the idea of "
reduce micro-latencies" interesting.
