I have an old dual core 1.3GHz AMD E-300 Accelerated Processor and 8 gigs of ddr2 ram in an old hp 2000 laptop. I need a light linux os that is like ubuntu but lighter and on it I need a graphical user interface that is easy to learn. It also needs to be capable of using virtual box.

I tried a few not long ago, but my favourite was Linux Mint XFCE. It has a fairly friendly GUI and doesn't look like it's straight out of the 90s like most distros.

VirtualBox is very resource intensive so it depends what OS you're planning to run virtually as to what the performance will be.

I edit my posts a lot.

Ok I will try that. I have also been looking at Bodhi Linux as well.

The desktop environment can be swapped out at will, but I agree with XFCE. Look into fluxbox as well

Do not use ubuntu! It's not light even with xfce or any other DE. I suggest install manjaro linux (one with xfce). It's user friendly even for begginers. It has much newer software then ubuntu or any other debian based distro. It's rolling release you will not have to reinstall or upgrade to newer version. You will always have newest version.

On distrowatch it's on second place https://distrowatch.com/

Mint 2868

Manjaro 2810

Or if you are advanced linux user then install arch linux and try i3-gaps there is no way you will have full system like that with lighter requirements. :)

Computer users fall into two groups:
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.

I usually recommend one of these two with XFCE for older machines. Of the two, I prefer Mint (I like Apt over Pacman), but I usually recommend one or the other depending on the user's tech savviness.
