Hey,

 

So my stupid self decided to try out this proof of concept thing of combining two different ISP connections together to get more speed.

So now i have

ISP1: 100/100Mbps

ISP2: 500/50Mbps

Any geniuses out here who could recommend me some kind of magical device where i could combine those and get 600/150Mbps?

Also one more issue i have with combining the connection is that ISP2 blocks port 25, since i am hosting my own email, i would need to have all of that traffic go though ISP1.

 

So if anyone have managed to get something similar to work tips would be more than welcome.

 

Budget for a device is ~1000$.

LTT produced a video on a device which doubles your internet speed based on this but I think it was designed to aggregate two identical speed connections. I don't know if it would work with different speed connections.

 

I'd use to lesser speed connection for the potentially network jeopardizing equipment like the email server and such then the faster connection for the rest of the home.

That is indeed one option, could i somehow connect my server to a inside LAN with that setup?

Your max speed does not double but your capacity does with bonded/aggregate links.

If the server has 2 Ethernet ports you could setup separate networks on both interfaces and just tell the software which network to use for internet connections but to share the service on the LAN you want.

You misinterpreted what I said. I know that bonding/link aggregation doesn't give a single client the throughput of both links. When I said aggregate I meant it in the non-technical term meaning "to bring together".

 

The device I'm talking about doesn't LA the connections it distributes the load between the routers giving single clients the combined bandwidth of both similar to SMB3.0 Multichannel.

Need a 3rd party service usually unless you want to host your own transit point, usually in a data centre.

 

Essentially your two connections point to the gateway at the provider with some special hardware. They can then split the data streams between your two services;

To properly bond them you'd need to use BGP and one of the ISPs would have to volunteer to be the ASN which is pretty hard to get one or the other to agree to. As others mentioned above it's better to balance traffic between the two - you'd also need to have multiple IP addresses listed for your DNS records and MX records for fail-over.

a few years ago when I switched to fiber, we had an active cable account for a few weeks during the changeover so I connected the cable modem and fiber interface to my router and set up dual WAN. This worked exceptionally well for software that made multiple connections simultaneously like... torrenting legal things and updating World of Warcraft, but direct downloads only used one connection so they did not benefit at all.
