Hi guys,

I am planning on purchasing an eGPU some time next year, however I do not know how future proof it would be.

From what I have read so far, there is next to no performance loss (about 5%) when it comes to lower fps (60-70 fps) such as on 4K gaming. However, I have a few questions.

Do you believe that the bottlenecking would be a massive problem with the next Nvidia GPUs? Namely, will the performance loss from TB3 be worse than the upgrade from a 1070 to a 1170, as an example?

And what really are the performance losses on TB3 when upgrading GPU power? If a 1080 is 50% more powerful than a 1070, what would be the power gain from 1070 to 1080 egpu? 30% instead? I am trying to gauge the % performance loss from more powerful GPUs to try and see how future proof thunderbolt 3 eGPU cases are, and if they would be worthwhile for me.

Are there any 'hacks' to use multiple TB3 ports? How would I know if my two TB3 ports share the same 4 PCIe lanes?

Ideally I would like for there to be a no more than 10% performance loss from an 1180, to compare to today's 5% performance loss from a 1080 egpu (on low fps).

Any thoughts? Disorganized question, mainly because there's little I know about performance loss and there's a lot of ground to cover. Hope someone can share their opinions/expertise.

I don’t think the performance loss with using a eGPU dock is something to worry about. I would look at online benchmarks comparing native PCIE performance versus external PCIE performance through Thunderbolt 3.

Thank you very much for your reply!

Cool alright, should I google for that exactly? As in, what keywords should I go for

Sorry for the late reply, here is a decent thing I found https://egpu.io/forums/mac-setup/pcie-slot-dgpu-vs-thunderbolt-3-egpu-internal-display-test/ that should give you an idea of what to expect.

Thank you very much. Although, that refers to internal display egpu bottlenecking which is far more considerable.

From that it seems that it varies a crap ton. Even a Titan X 12GB experiences only 20% performance loss with an external monitor using TB2; not even the double speed TB3.
