Hi, so here's the deal: I already own a pretty powerful rig (i5 4690k @4,7Ghz, GTX 1070, 16GB of Ram ect...) and I would like to buy a decent laptop for LANs, indeed I'm living pretty far away from my friends with whom I love to play hours and hours and I'm going to visit them in about 2 or 3 weeks, as my setup is kinda heavy and not really practical to travel with I decided to buy a laptop, but I would like it to be good and not too expansive.

I thought about buying a laptop with let's say 8GB of Ram, a 1050Ti and an i5 7300hq or an i7 7700hq.

Let's get straigth to the point: I want it to be "upgradable" and I thought about buying one with a thunderbolt 3 port which will allow it to be "upgraded" with a much better GPU in the future with a dedicated eGPU dock.

What do you think ? Should I go with that kind of config ? Better options ?

Thank you in advance for your answers :)

(By the way, sorry for my english, I haven't practiced in a long time ^^")

eGPU docks are rarely worth it. You can almost build an entire mITX system for the same price.

I'd grab one of the last gen Dell Inspiron 15's, or perhaps even the new G3/G7 laptops. Both can be had with GTX 1060s.

Indeed, much better price/performance with those laptops as it has the latest intel gen cpus, but I'm still not sure about the durability, as I've always used desktops computers all I needed to do to keep it working well with my games was just swapping hardware, laptop is a different story though, wouldn't want my laptop to be out of date / unable to decently run games in like 5-6 years, that's actually why I was focusing on eGPU docks. Anyway, thank you for the advice, I might buy a G7 if it's released in time in my country (living in France ^^")

Why would durability be any different? That's a rather odd thing to worry about.

Honestly, expecting a PC to last 5 to 6 years is asking a bit much. Especially when it comes to laptops. Even so, if that's your worry then the newer 8th generation is a no brainer. More cores. When it comes down to it, selling the old laptop and buying another one with the price you'd be paying for the GPU dock factored in would be a smarter choice with a more portable system, and likely vastly better performance.

If you want someone to know that you've replied, you need to quote them like I've done or tag them like thsi @Zanow
