GTX 470 or GT 1030 or GT 730

Delta-c-tech

I would like to know if I should choose between a GTX 470, GT 1030 or GT 730 (I know its crap)

Of those, the GTX 470 is the most powerful, followed by the GT 1030, and finally the GT 730, which is weaker than modern integrated graphics.

Assuming your current GPU is a GTX 470, then yes. The other two would be a significant downgrade.

You'd be stupidly lucky to find a 970 for under $100 let alone a 980 or a 980Ti. You're almost just as likely to find a 980Ti for $10.

I've seen a 980 go for £80 before, idk what sorta condition it was in though, seller never said what condition it was in.

GT 1030 will play modern games a bit better because of the additional VRAM.  Honestly, I wouldn't get anything below 4gb.  There are quite a few games where 2gb simply is not enough and FPS will be 30 or less because of the GPU needing to use system memory.

My GTX 970 G1 Gaming with its faults is worth less than $100, despite the fact that it technically functions.....
Not selling it though as I don't have enough for a newer+better card, and I'd have to use my can't-launch-some-games rev2.0 GTX 650ti OC 2GB.

The only way you find GPUs at such ridiculously low prices is if someone is stupid, if there is something wrong with it, or someone just wants it gone instantly (and is stupid). The odds of actually finding one at a price point other than $150, $200, and $300~ respectively is ridiculously low and not even worth mentioning.

Well of course something broken will sell for less, but I don't think the intention of buying a $100+ gpu is to buy something broken.

It runs at PCI-e x8 due to some of the resistors along the connector being missing, and it runs as hot as a reference GTX 970 (underclocked to reference it matches reviewed temps). And I also get driver crashes if playing a game that maxes out the GPU while watching YT on a second screen

If you wanted to save a bit off electricity costs the 1030 otherwise the 470 you have is still sounding okay for you, otherwise stick with it dude ?

Yes, it is more efficient. It also runs cooler, has more VRAM, and supports DX12. However, I suspect the question was not what was more efficient or advanced, but rather what was more effective.

That said, I used two different measurements to reach my conclusion:

The GTX 470 has a 55.18% higher PassMark score. [source]
The GTX 470 has a 12% higher UserBenchmark score, with 23% higher benchmarks and 29% higher overclocked benchmarks. [source]

In my experience, I've found that those two do an OK job of comparing cards between the same manufacturer, in lieu of benchmarks including the same base hardware over a large spectrum of non-synthetic applications. It could be said that newer titles are made with newer hardware in mind, and that synthetic benchmarks aren't representative of real world performance (which is certainly true); however, with these scores and the suspicion he already owned the GTX 470, I could not in good conscience recommend he spend $90 on "upgrading" to a GT 1030.

I was being slightly sarcastic. I knew that you were going to pick Passmark and userbenchmark as your sources. Most new people do + people who don't really care about which is better.

Anyway, they don't represent real world results as well as a proper benchmark like Firestrike does. They're terrible system benchmarks and terrible GPU comparison tools since they're too reliant on CPU + RAM performance which should (and always should) be irrelevant for the GPU test. I'm willing to bet that the GT 1030 result would do a lot better with a 7980XE. Because of course a free program made for fast comparisons will be so badly written that the user sees significant speed upgrades with a faster CPU rather than a faster GPU.

Synthetic benchmarks do a pretty good job at showing real world performance if they don't suck (Firestrike, Superposition). That GT 1030 narrowly edges the GTX 470 in FS and pulls way less power. How that's not an advantage idk.
