Hi everyone,

I'm just wondering if it's possible to run two separate routers.

I've got one at the moment, and I moved it so I could have a wired connection to my PC, but that means that the rest of my family can't have wired to the Xbox and our internet is trash so it's wired or practically nothing.

Can I have two routers connected to separate adsl port things (if you guys know what I mean, I don't know exactly what they'd be called) or would I have to do something sketchy?

Thanks all

It is possible, just as long as you don’t have too many wireless connections on the second router and first router.

You’d just need to run a Ethernet (Cat5e/Cat6) wire from the first router to the “Internet” port of the second router you’re planning to use.

I think you could simply connect an ethernet cable from the router to one of the ethernet ports of the second router (and leave the adsl / wan port unused on the 2nd router).

The ethernet ports on the router are basically connected to an ethernet switch inside the router, so the devices you'd plug in the 2nd router would automatically be in the same network with the original router (the 2nd router's integrated ethernet switch should just pass data packets between devices and the cable going to 1st router)

You don't want two routers working at the same time, it'll not work correctly. With two routers, you'd need to disable the routing on one of them, so it only becomes an AP/switch.

Your best bet may be to use Home Plugs/Powerline. That way you can use your houses electrical wiring as the network. If you need to connect multiple devices into one home plug, then buy a cheap gigabit switch. Devices > Switch > Home Plug > Electrical wiring > Home Plug > Router > Internet. That's how I'd do it.

Stop and think a second, something is more than nothing.
