help on gpu choice

MagiC85

Hello ppl, im new on the forum and i need help to buy a new gpu and i have a few doubts

i ve this build (oldie)

i7 3770k @ 4,6ghz + Crosair H90

asus sabertooth z77

16gb ddr3 @ 1600

2SSD (120 + 240)

2 HDD (1TB + 1,5)

MSI r9 380 gaming oc 4gb

fractal design 1000W tesla

i want to buy a new gpu to replace my old one

i was thinking on one EVGA GTX 1060 SC 6gb (the tiny one) or the zotac amp! edtion (350 euros +/-)

then a friend told me like this buy a new mobo + ram + cpu (and keep your old gpu)

(R5 1600 + msi b350 gaming3 + 16gb DDR4 teamgroup 2400mhz) price about 400 euros

my question is.. what is better? keep the i7 and buy 1060 or keep the gpu and change to ryzen

thanks in advance for help :)

Your current i7 is still plenty fast to be mated to a GTX1070 for instance, so I wouldn't upgrade your board. DDR4 prices are expected to drop by the end of the year, so upgrade next year maybe.

I'd go for the Zotac card as the tiny cards are much more susceptible to coil whine from what I've seen. You might want to check if you can find a 2nd hand 980Ti for <€350 though, as that card will be quite a bit faster than a 1060.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

The problem is that the GTX1060 wasn't €350 two years ago when it launched. In fact, they started around €260 for the 6GB model. As you can tell, prices are inflated a lot because of cryptocurrency mining with GPUs. A second hand GPU will buy you more performance per euro.

If you don't want that, get the 1060, as the 1070/1070Ti prices aren't worth the current premium.

The CPU is still pretty good. I would keep it and get a new GPU

PC SPECS: i7 - 3820, 32GB GSkill DDR3 RAM, 2TB Seagate Hybrid Drive, Intel 240GB SSD, Corsair Spec Omega Case, Strix GTX 1060 6GB, Corsair H150i Pro RGB, Corsair CX850M PSU

Look at Gigabyte cards, a lot of there cards have returned to MSRP, their 1060 6GB has fallen back down to under 300 Euro and is 290 currently. Crypto mining is beginning to lose steam, we will just have to see what happens to it after the next series of cards come out.

Your current step up is powerful enough to handle a better GPU. A 1060 6GB is a good card as long as you can get it for a decent price, or you could wait until the next series of GPUs get released and go for something like a 1070.
