AMD to INTEL CPU upgrade

Go to solution Solved by RedAV8R,

Now is your time to fix things. Games won't be able to be saved, so forget those. But move files from SSD to your HDD. Wipe and install windows on the SSD once you replace MB and CPU, then move important files from HDD back to SSD. Wipe and start fresh on your HDD and put files and games back on HDD.

Hi! I had built a gaming PC almost a year ago. specs just in case you need them:

CPU: Amd FX-6300(I know bad choice)

GPU:GTX 1060

MOTHERBOARD:MSI 970 gaming motherboard

Memory: Crucial ballistix ddr3 1600mhz

Storage: WD Blue 1TB, crucial SSD (240gb)

power supply: Corsair 500w PSU

OS:WINDOWS 8.1

So, i want to upgrade the cpu to an intel i5-7600k , i know i'm gonna have to change the motherboard as well but what about the storage? I have a lot of games and other important files stored on the HDD. I've installed windows on the hdd(i know, another bad choice) and the files on the ssd. So can i just swap out the cpu and motherboard out for the new one or will it be a long, tedious process?

THANKS!:)

If the games are on steam, they can be saved.

I haven't owned a game you couldn't backup in some way. Steam and similar clients or cloud based accounts makes it unbelievably easy. If you don't have Steam or some game client just go through your game list one by one and back them up.

There's no place like ~

Don't buy Kaby Lake

You should be reinstalling windows with any major hardware change, just buy a flash drive and back up your data

The R5 1600 is going to be about the best value chip you can buy. Ryzen 2 is coming April 19th for a free 10% performance bump over current Ryzen at the same prices.

You should consider upgrading to a Coffee Lake cpu. The i5-8400 has significantly better better performance than the i5-7600K and is usually much less expensive. With the new B360 motherboards, overall cost is also competitive.

You will have to also change memory to DDR4. With an i5-8400, something like DDR4-2666 CL15 or faster is a good choice.

Changing cpu is a long somewhat tedious process. With Windows 8.1 the best upgrade option is to completely reinstall the o/s and all programs. It is possible to save data. You just need to determine where games etc. are stored and make backup copies which can later be copied to the new system.

If you have the budget, you might take the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 10.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
