I am not well versed when it comes to modems and such for internet access. The place I will be moving only offers wifi and at slow speeds if we use the landlord's internet. The real estate agent lied to me over the phone saying we could have our own internet connection (that is a separate issue though....) The previous tenants used the landlord's wifi and a repeater. They have 5 down and .64 up  ... Yeah not usable at all. I have servers and a desktop so wifi is not going to work out.

My question comes in that there is a coax (cable) connector on the wall. Could I just plug in a modem and it would give me internet access provided the cable is actually connected? This is a last ditch effort at this point. We have already put in our notice to break the lease.

Likely that coax on the wall is connected to a splitter somewhere on location. For best cable internet (if at all) you either need to replace the splitter (which sometimes the cable company does anyway) or have a dedicated line. Even then sometimes depending on age of the house that coax cable isn't going to be up to snuff for good access.

Not ideal, but you can set up a device to bridge your own internal network to your landlords wifi. So you have your own wifi that is using landlords as it's internet connection, therefore YOUR speeds will be closer to max, though your outside connection will be at that slower speed.

Those slower speeds mean I can't do half of what I do daily. It also means no netflix, can't work remote, no web server, web facing NAS and tons of other things too. Sadly it would mean moving just for internet. This unit is good priced too would suck.

If the ISP provides service via the coax cable then yes

(and of course, as you said, it's connected)

Hope it is so that we can get internet via cable then.

Yep. If bandwidth is what you need/want. A call to cable company should get you set up. Landlord may not like it, but hey, then you have an out ;)

Cable modems need the best possible signal. You generally dont want more than a two way spliter between the main line coming in and the modem. That being said, its hard to tell how the house is wired with out seeing it. Hopefully your land lord is not a dick and will let you have service installed. If not tell him you are moving and he can find some one else to deal with shittastic internet.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

wow as a landlord who includes internet in the deal I don't care if they want there own service or not.

I am not going to lower your rent due to the fact you have your own internet. BTW is is the best package that isp offers.

I have included wiring in your place to accommodate coax or dsl and eventually fiber. install should go smooth.

I never asked for them to reduce rent. Where did I ever state that? One of the questions asked to their agent was "can we have our own internet connection" in pretty much those words then only after we signed the lease were told we were to use the landlords WiFi which mind you is 1 bar on my laptop and 2 bars on my phone. So being lied to is a piss off and they required 2 lasts because of us relocating so a new job, fine fair enough but so many things wrong with it. We already put in our 60 day notice to terminate the lease. Learned my lesson the hard way, get everything in writing and signed upon or go with a company instead of an individual.

That is the best package the one ISP offers but a different one offers to the same address, 150 down and 10 up, for the same price. No clue why the difference in price but they don't seem to care at all as I am told they don't use the internet much so "it will be free for you to use yourselves"  what a load of BS. As said our 60 day notice has been given and we have not even moved in yet. So there for the 3 months we paid for and not a second longer.

Oh we have given notice already, just there for 3 months then gone. I will talk to the landlord when they return from holidays instead of their agent who is proving to be a lying, scum bag who can't speak English worth shit and is fairly dumb when it comes to tech even though he claimed to work in tech before. He claimed that .64 up is more than enough to do what ever we want and that netflix would work fine on 5 down too. Maybe one SD stream and nothing else but that's not realistic.

Okay? You would be someone I would never consider renting from then. My point is that I require it and I asked and was lied to. I need to figure out a solution or move ASAP. Staying with that kind of internet is not an option for me.

I think you got the wrong idea of what he was saying. He was saying as a landlord that he would be fine with people paying for and having their own line/cable installed... at least that's what I understood him to mean.
