How is it that until last year AMD's cpus were not even considered as an option and then suddenly they announced and released ryzen. What change in AMD's team took place that lead to AMD rising again in the cpu market with the ryzen line-up?

The OLD FX chips were horribly old with bad IPC compared to offerings from Intel. WIth Ryzen, they made up a HUGE chunk in that gap to be competitive again with Intel. They still lag behind a little on the IPC, but they are leaps and bounds ahead of their other offerings.

Before Ryzen, AMD made the FX line-up, which was introduced in 2011 and not really improved upon until last year because the design behind it was vastly inferior to what Intel was doing. While they were pretty good in multithreaded workloads, by the time Intel's Haswell came out, that lead was gone as well. Single threaded performance was historically poor, so they were not suitable for gaming beyond 2013 at all, as they would start to become bottlenecks to the R9 280X/GTX770 and higher cards.

invested billions of dollars in research and development, an endeavour that took them over 4 years to end up with a CPU that is almost as good as intel's last generation CPU.
