Hello,

I've just ordered all my parts except one: the power supply.

Could you please recommend a good and inexpensive modular or semi-modular psu?

I currently have a GTX 1060 6GB and I'd like the PSU to handle a more powerful card if I want to upgrade in a couple of years. I do intend to overclock my current gpu. However, I do not inted to have 2 gpu's in the future.

My build:

CPU: Intel - Core i5-8400 2.8GHz 6-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: be quiet! - SHADOW ROCK LP 51.4 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: ASRock - Z370M-ITX/ac Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill - Aegis 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
Storage: Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: MSI - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB Video Card
Case: NZXT - H200i (Black) Mini ITX Tower Case

Thank you

Go for an 850W PSU. I have a pc with slightly more powerful specs and its working fine for me. If you wanna be EXTRA safe then maybe go a little higher

PC SPECS: i7 - 3820, 32GB GSkill DDR3 RAM, 2TB Seagate Hybrid Drive, Intel 240GB SSD, Corsair Spec Omega Case, Strix GTX 1060 6GB, Corsair H150i Pro RGB, Corsair CX850M PSU

You'll find that a 550W PSU will run that system with ease. Have a look in my signature for the PSU tier list, which will help you pick a high quality power supply.

Thanks. I've created the first topic and then found a better place for my question. Didn't find the delete button, I'm new here :-).

The PSU tier list is great. I'm researching now to find the best deal.

isn't 850W a bit overkill? I ran a couple of test on a few calculators and the max recommended PSU (with some overhead) was 650W. 650W was recommenden when I changed the build to a 1080ti, extra HDD 7.2k, RGB and 2 extra fans.

A quality 450W PSU would run that system. The 8400 would draw about 50W at most, the 1060 would draw about 130W at most, and everything else is about 15W in total.

Thank you, I think I'll go for 550W just to have that extra leg-room if I get a raise and decide to upgrade some parts. Thanks for the quick reply!

Austria. Budget as low as possible for a quality psu, but I do hope no more than 70 EUR.

If you can order from German stores, there's the Formula Gold or Focus Gold. The Focus is semi modular. The more budget oriented units are the Pure Power 10, Vengeance and Masterwatt

:)

Thanks for the quick reply. I think I'll go with either the Pure Power 10 500W or the Vengeance 550W. Focus and Formula are a tad too expensive. The Masterwatt I can only find in non-modular configuration.

So a smaller Formfactor Case.

And mid rangeish hardware.

For that a good 400-450W is more than enough, for example Bitfenix Formula or Whisper M, be quiet Pure Power 10 or better Straight Power 11 (400 and 450W).

If you want to be 'on the safer side' you can go for 500-550W but more than that is just a waste and only makes sense when there isn't anything of decent quality available in your country.

ANd no, a 650W won't be more quiet than a 450W when both have the same Layout.

Makes no sense for a single CPU/GPU Setup.

Those ones are usually at around 200-300W power consumption. An 850W PSU is just totally useless for that and a waste of money.#

For that you could get a better graphics card for example.

Besides that, most 850W wouldn't fit anyway, so that is that.

Bitfenix Formula 450

Be quiet Pure Power 400W or 500W

Those two for example.

He can.

AFAIR every somewhat decent German shop delivers to the german speaking Austrians....

The Corsair CX450M is really an optimal choice for this build. It would be very difficult to upgrade and push power requirements beyond 400W.

The cpu would be better paired with DDR4-2666 memory.

You might consider the Cryorig H7 cpu cooler. It would be better at cooling the cpu which should mean quieter operation.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

An 850W could comfortably power an 8600K and two 1080 Tis, this system does not need anywhere near 850W. OP's system will draw maybe 220W under load.

Most of the recommendations I'd give have been recommended already, so yeah, go for a CX450M if you're going for cheaper, and if you want a better unit that will last you longer then get the aforementioned Bitfenix or Seasonic units.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

It's not just a matter of the rig itself. The PSU power is also determined by what peripherals, monitors etc are connected to the PC. I don't think that 450W would be enough to supply all of thee devices typically connected to a PC.

No

Monitors have internal Power Supplys. Apple's ADC was discontinued with newer systems.

And the usual USB 2.0 device has a limit of 500mA/5V.

That was increased to 900mA with USB 3.0...

And don't think, measure things!

Because what you measure is the truth (well, if your measuring device is accurate), what you think does not matter...

Monitors have their own power bricks. USB peripherals draw less than or equal to 4.5W for USB 3 items and 2.5W for USB 2 items (both from the 5V rail). An IDE HDD (only HDD I have on hand to get measurements from, a modern HDD will use less power) draws 15.36W from the 12V rail, and 3.7W from the 5V rail. As I said already, the GTX 1060 draws about 120W under load (from the 12V rail mostly), and the 8400 will draw about 40-60W at most. A 450W PSU will do fine.

That sounds like something like a Western Digital Raptor drive.

Or something like that.

Right now I have a Hitachi 2TB Drive with 5900rpm (or something like that):

5V 430mA, 12V 350mA on the label.

A similar 2TB Toshiba (7200rpm):

same 430mA on 5V but 740mA on +12V.
