Is this HDD dead

Hi

 

I have this hard drive lying around. 500GB Seagate ST3500320AS.

 

When I plug it into my computer, it boots up slower than usual but does eventually work.

 

If I go into task manager, disk shows 100% usage, no read or writing.

If I go into file explorer, it shows the drive, but no bar showing how full it is. If I then click on it, file explorer freezes then crashes. The drive is drive H by the way

If I go into disk management, it doesn't load

If I type diskpart into cmd it just hangs and I can't type.

 

None of this happens if the system is booted without the drive connected

I've had a similar behavior with thumb drive before it stopped working entirely.

Update:

 

The diskpart has loaded after about 20 minutes of waiting. So has disk management.

 

Drive shows up as RAW 465.76 GH Healthy (Primary partition). I go to format the drive as NTFS default settings and disk management freezes.

Disk managment is now responding and says formatting. I will wait

Hey, sorry to hear that your drive is having trouble! 

You can try grabbing our free diagnostic software SeaTools to scan the health of the drive. Where you seem to be running into issues trying to run different utilities/programs on the drive at the Windows level, it may be a good idea to try the SeaTools for DOS version to see if it can get at the drive at a more direct level.
