So I am having an issue where Windows keeps trying to automatically update while I am in the middle of something. The update assistant pops up and tries to install the "newest security updates". (which installs the creator update, which I don't want) how can I keep the windows update from happening? I need to stay on the windows 10 version I am on for some tasks that only work on it. Please help me figure out how to permanently block automatic updates!

I was going to suggest going to advance options and selecting delay updates, but when I went to check on my work computer to make sure that was what I had set, I see that Win 10 version 1709 build 16299.309 no longer has that option.

Looks like they have removed any way to delay or refuse an update.

Anyone else have any better information?

It's easy.

Search for Services and hit enter, double click on Windows Update, change the Startup Type to Disabled, click Apply to keep these changes, and last... hit OK.

Done. No more updates until you want them. This has always worked for me since Windows 10 first came out.

For some reason, the update assistant reinstalls itself and updates keep happening..

That is by design. They like to inconvenience you. Other than turning of the Windows Update service, there is not much you can do.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Here is the proper way to do it:

  1. Make sure that Windows 10 is fully updated (this must be your starting ground)
  2. Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Change active hours. In there you can pick a range of time that you don't want Windows Update to kick-in.
  3. Then go to: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced options. Make sure that "We'll show a reminder when we are going to restart" is enabled
  4. Then on the same page, at the bottom, go to "Delivery Optimization", and then on "Advanced Options". In there you can set a throttling of the download done by Windows Update. This is important to define in the case you use the internet actively (say, you play a game), to not eat your connection up.
  5. Once done, go to: Start > type: Maintenance > Pick "Security and Maintenance". A Windows 7 style panel will open. In there, expand "Maintenance", and pick the blue link "Change maintenance settings". In there specify a time where your PC will be turned on (or sleeping), and not turned off for some time, and make sure the checkbox is enabled. Windows needs to do various maintenance tasks to keep things running smoothly, and keep the system fast and responsive (so that you need to re-install Windows every 6 month like XP days and earlier to achieve this easily).

Once all this is configured, Windows Update and maintenance will be working around you, and not against you.
