So I'm going to be rebuilding a computer kindof from scratch (ie new motherboard, cpu, and ram), but I'm also going to be keeping the drives, graphics card, and other peripherals. I'm planning on adding a m.2 ssd to boot from and my question is, do I need to buy a new activation code for windows 10 or is it possible to keep the same one from my old PC? I'd prefer to do a fresh install on the ssd but I didn't know if it would be possible to transfer the activation code to it since I'm changing some of the main parts of my current pc.

Yes you want to do a fresh install - the sheer amount of driver issues and BSOD's windows will throw up if you dont... (saying that I went from Pentium to X299 sooo :) ) any who - yes you can, as long as you are signed in on a Microsoft Account on the computer and have verified the PC (Go to Settings > System > about) and make sure you sign in on the same account. On setup, click "I dont have a product key" when it asks you for one. Once signed in, go to windows activation settings, select your old computers name (if you have more than one be sure to check the name of your current computer) and click "I've changed hardware on this PC" and give it a moment. It'll do its thing and you'll be back to normal

Alternatively, download Magic Jelly Bean and write down your activation code.

Awesome to hear. I've heard about that solution, but I honestly didn't really know how it all works out. Thanks a lot!

Is your key OEM or retail? In theory OEM keys lock onto mobo. So if it doesn't activate, you need new code. This has been pretty much 50-50 thing since Win10 and linking key to account became a thing. So I can't say for sure if yours will work or not.

Originally it was OEM Win 8, but I put a retail Win 10 code on there to move it to Professional. And that's what I was a bit worried about since I've dealt with that problem in the past on different machines, but the parts are coming in this week so by the weekend I can post an update to see how it goes (fingers crossed)

You are all good then. Either use same retail code to activate or login to MS Account.

Awesome, I'm glad to hear that. Thanks for the extra information though. I'll make sure to keep that in mind.
