So basically this is a thread to theory about upcoming gpu and when...

RTX seems like a cool tech but will it be as game changing as they proclaim and since its only  possible on Volta + future cards ... whats the point of pascal ?

sit down eat popcorn and wait for forum to explode ;)

It won't explode the thread will simply be locked, either way ray tracing though cool tech will still not be practical for quite a while so its rather irrelevant

So the 3 - 4 companies that have been implementing it saying it will be early next yearish are just lying ?

It takes years to develop a game. Just look at DX12, announced 4 years ago, is still not supported at all by some new releases.

3dmark is making a benchmark with raytracing and pascal cards will be able to run it, we'll see by then.

No, the performance will simply be bad and it will be used in a very limited capacity, probably in large quantities during in engine cutscenes while in actual game play it will be a small role, not unlike how hairworks tessellation was used.

In other words it won't become common enough to matter for quite a while, probably 4+ years.

1080ti would be stupid to buy not because of this new tech, but rather due to mining price increases, though it is always best to buy during the beginning of a product's life cycle than the end as pascal is 2 years old and they will release Turing cards sometime in Q3. In short the reason to not buy pascal isn't ray tracing it is a combo of bad pricing and late timing.

Get a 900 series card. It's already lost half of its value so you wont take that big of a hit.

It would be awesome, if that was the only Problem ^^

Main Issue with DX12 is, that even today, all games (maybe 1-2 exceptions) with DX12 have a SHITTY implementation of it. Even BF1, which has some of the best developers in Dice, runs better in DX11.

What benefits mostly from DX12 are FX CPUs, who can achieve higher fps, by running later into CPU Bottleneck (because it doesn't all depend on 1 single Main Thread)

Well of course. These games got their DX12 support added in through update patches, of course it wont work as well as games that uses DX12 from the beginning.
