Hello, So I love watching Linus Tech Tips and the topics you guys discuss are awesome but hear me out every time I watch these video it makes me wanna consider which career path I should take in life, So I decided to join the #masterrace and to be honest I love watching tech videos but I'm really a novice and most of the tech things you talk about on the channel I don't understand majority of it,so I decided to go back to school and start from the begining with IT then later persue Computer Engineering Technology. So basically I would love some advice on how to start or how it was for you guys on the forum and at Linus tech tips to start your careers in the field of computer technology

Oh and yes I will be doing this course in Canada so if you also have any suggestion on which college would be best for me that would greatly be appreciated

If your school/university offers a coop/internship program, take it.

It will allow you to experience job that you would typically need higher education or more job experience to even get into.  So not only will you be putting your education on your resume, you can actually put down some useful job experience.

I did a coop term (which ended up being extended to 2 full years) with the Canadian government and did pretty much the same job duties as the regular staff despite them all having full degrees.   Life got busy for me and I only managed to complete a 1 year certificate in my university program but the 2 years working at the government allowed me to roll straight into my full time IT career which I'm still doing now.

I haven't really gotten any experience, but if you want to go into CompSci, there are basically 3 really good universities. There are tons of other good ones, but afaik these are the big ones.

UofT

UBC

UW

If you can, try to make it into a program with coop. This will get you work experience to get you started on your journey.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

Oh, I probably should have mentioned...

I did my program through Kwantlen.  The coop program also had a 1 - 2 week long course that taught resume writing and interview skills.

If you're in the west coast lower mainland, BCIT or Kwantlen should be good choices.

You joined the Nazis? I wasn't aware Linus's videos had that kind of affect on people.

I would suggest starting with an English class, unless you literally put zero effort into that post. I'm not trying to be mean about that either, just trying to be honest. Do you know what aspect of IT you'd like to get into? It's extremely vast. If you're looking to get a job with a YouTube channel, I'd maybe consider something more stable unless you're quite young and can afford to throw away a few years of your life if it doesn't work out. Do you like continual learning? If not, then IT isn't for you.

Also look into the future job market. Don't go to school for something like a Help Desk, since that kind of position will basically become irrelevant over the years.

Saying you live in Canada isn't that helpful, it's a big place. You need to be more specific.

I'd suggest spending $50 and taking a bunch of courses on Lynda.com. See if you even like the content you'll be learning.
