Hello! I've been trying to change the DNS server on my Netgear C6300 router/modem, but it has not been allowing me to do so. I type in the IP's for Norton's Connectsafe public DNS servers, then hit apply. However, It comes up with an error stating "Invalid IP address."  I am not exactly sure as to what it means by that- Internet IP Addresses are set to br retrieved dynamically from my ISP. I have tried doing it from different computers, A Wi-Fi connected laptop, and a Ethernet desktop computer. If it helps, the firmware version is V2.01.26. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You see that thing that says Internet IP Address? You need to select get Dynamically from ISP. Thats why its bitching.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I tried that and setting it to Google's DNS servers, and it still came up with the same error.

Did you switch the Internet IP to Dynamic? If not that is your problem. Your router is expecting you put an IP address there. Seeing how your ISP assigns one dynamically you need to set it to dynamic.

I set the Internet IP to dynamic and then clicked on use these DNS servers, typed in Google's servers, and hit apply. When it's set to dynamic, it grays out the boxes and fills them out automatically like it should, so I don't touch it. I left it alone, but yet it still doesn't want me to change anything. My ISP is Comcast and their DNS servers aren't really the greatest, and this did work before I did a factory reset not to long ago, and I set it up. I appreciate everyone's help so far. But I have NO idea what is going on. I log into the router's settings, go to advanced, then hit Internet Port, which leads to the internet setup page. By default it's set to get the IP from my ISP. The boxes are greyed out and already have the numbers filled out, so I left that alone. I went down to DNS, hit the "Use these DNS servers" button and typed in Google's or Norton's DNS servers. I double check to be sure they are typed in correctly, then hit apply. It still says "Failure, Invalid IP address." I slam my head against the desk, but that didn't help either. Maybe I should try to call Comcast?

Well Comcast uses a Dynamic IP. If your using their modem, thats your problem. Im also a Comcast sub and I use my own modem and separate router. I haven't used the Comcast DNS servers in at least 4 years. According to the picture above you should be able to set the IP address to dynamic and if you look at the DNS part there are two boxes there, and you should be able to select use these servers, even with the Dynamic IP. If you cant, then I suggest you buy your own modem. Comcast is not going to help you change DNS servers. They would prefer that you use theirs.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

This is my own personal Netgear C6300. It's a modem/router combo certified to work with Comcast. Maybe something's wrong with it, then perhaps I should get ahold of Netgear. Ever since I first reset the thing it decides to be a jerk. Maybe I should try and reset it again just to see what happens? Maybe there's a way to reinstall the firmware of the router modem thing? It really is a fantastic router and I spent $150 on it. I'd hate to have to break out my old one or end up renting one from them. Maybe Comcast is blocking me from changing servers somehow? It'd be odd, because it was working just fine before.

Comcast aint blocking shit. If its a customer owned device they have really little control over it. I mean they can push Firmware and config files to it all day long, but they dont have access to remote in to network settings. This could be a firmware bug, but Modem/router combos really should only be updated thru the ISP, I dont think a customer can update it themselves. Which is why two separate devices is better than one AIO device. Because Ive been using Google's DNS server for years with no issues from Comcast. I have always used a separate modem and router.  But I will tell you this, they wont help you. If its not their modem they will just tell you, that you can rent one of their boxes.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Okay, so I'll probably just do that and look into buying two separate hardware pieces instead of an all in one. Thank you so much for your help!

That would be a good plan. Id still call Netgear if your under warranty. Just to see what they can do for you. On the other hand, you might be able to turn the current hardware in to a modem, by putting it in to bridge mode. That saves you money. Not sure if you have to call Comcast for that, as I know for their rented modems the option is not customer changeable.

The cheapest option is to setup the DNS settings directly on all of your hardware. Though that can be a pain in the ass if you have a lot of hardware.

Yeah, I do have laptops, computers, smart TV's and such little gadgets that are internet connected, but most of them are already set to Norton's DNS servers. It won't be a huge deal. I'm just glad the thing still works and it works well. I'll still call Netgear though. Thanks!

I checked into my router's logs out of curiosity and I see all of this. There's more as you scroll down, there's multiple logs in 1 day. What should I do?

Hard to say. The DoS attacks are kind of concerning. But if its not hurting anything Comcast wont do nothing.

Yeah, It is concerning. I don't have any reason as to why anyone would DoS anything. It isn't causing any kind of disturbance in performance. Any suggestions at all? No idea who or what would do this. Is there a way I can at least find out who or what is causing this? The router itself has built in DOS protection.

Comcast is the only ones who can help. The problem is, unless its impacting other customers they wont give a care in the world. Plus most of their support staff are retarded and I doubt they know was a DoS is.
