ok guys I have a problem I'm getting a second 970 for sli but my power supply only has one 6 pin connection left and one 8 pin connection but the graphics card requires two 6pins. Should I get 8pin that divides into two 6 pins or a 6 pin that divides into two 6 pins (I don't know if these exist) so help would be grateful. Also my power supply is silverstone 1200w platinum

Thank you

Couple of questions, I assume you mean the Strider 1200w platinum?

-Is the 8-pin labeled EPS? Does it split into 2x4-pin connectors?

-Have you looked at the 8-pin, if it's GPU it should split into a 6+2 connector and be fine, you just leave the other 2 pin hanging.

thanks for reply and no its different from that one you said  this is the one I have http://www.silverstonetek.com/legacy.php?area=en&model=ST1200

I have a free 8 pin that's labelled esp and one that's labelled PCIe +12 v5

I'm not really experienced so I'm sorry if what I'm saying doesn't make sense mate

The spec sheet on the PSU says that it should have 4x 6 pin and 2x 8/6 pin connectors. Did you lose some cables? EPS is not for the GPU.

If the 8-pin that's left says ESP then that's for the CPU, different layout and pinout than what the GPU needs.

I think this will work:

I'm using 3 of the 6pin so that leaves me with 1 left and I bought the computer 2nd hand few year back so I got no other cables thanks for the reply

The 8-pin should break off into a 6 and a 2. If that's the case, plug in the six and leave the 2 hanging.

There are also molex to PCIe power adapters.

I would just buy something like this if it is available. Just to make sure that you have all of the cables for your PSU for future use. Make sure whatever cables you get are compatible with the ST series PSUs. PSU cables are different from manufacturer to manufacturer and from series to series.

aww yeah that's nice the one in the bottom left is the one I need 8 pin for the power supply and the 2 6pins for the graphics cad

what's the cable at the bottom left called if you don't mind me asking

is the cable I'm looking for called 8Pin Male to Dual 8Pin(6+2) ?

ok I might have a solution guys my current 970 is 2 6pins that goes into splitter that creates a 8 pin for (gtx 970 asus) I could take the splitter off and use the 2 6pins for the new 970(gtx evga ftw) and buy and 8 pin to 8pin for my gtx asus 970  is that a better idea ??

thanks again guys

Don't use splitters. EVER.  In fact, if there are splitters in your PC now (one connector that plugs into another that splits off into two more connectors), I would suggest buying the proper cables to replace those as well.

Use adapters, but only when necessary.

There are two kinds of 8-pins.  There's EPS12V 8-pin (typically split into two fours) and PCIe 8-pin (typically split into a 6 and a 2).

According to what you're saying, you have only one PCIe and one EPS, correct?

DO NOT split the PCIe.  That's a HORRIBLE and potentially dangerous idea.  I've seen WAY TOO MANY melted connectors.  And if the manufacturer of the splitter is some random generic Chinese company, it's highly unlikely they're using UL94V rated plastic and THEY WILL CATCH FIRE!!!!

The best solution is to just buy the correct cable.  Both SilverStone and CableMod sells replacement/add-on cables for your PSU.

SilverStone cables:

PSU to one PCIe:  http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=358&area=en

PSU to 2x PCIe:  http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=357&area=en

These are sold separately, so will be much cheaper if you only want the one cable.

Cablemod:

Complete set:  https://cablemod.com/product/cablemod-st-series-modflex-cable-kit-black/

If you wanted to dress up the looks of your PC and/or have some extra cables.

No. Don't use splitters.

You're asking about in the picture of the green Cablemod set?  That's called a 2x PCIe connector cable.  It's not a splitter because it's MADE to have two PCIe connectors.

No.  That's a horrible idea.  If you want to use an adapter instead of getting the proper, native cable, you want what Lurick suggested over an hour ago:  https://www.amazon.com/Express-adapter-inches-sleeved-Angeles/dp/B005H3KH9E?tag=linus21-20

That converts your spare EPS12V 8-pin into a PCIe 6+2 pin (works as either a 6-pin PCIe or an 8-pin PCIe).

I found the solution out guys thanks for the help I'm taking of the splitter off (picture bellow) and using two 6pin cables for one card

and buying this http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?area=en&pid=358

for the other card  this should be fine correct ?
