Enabling HyperThreading on i5 2500k

Hi! I am really curious if I can enable hyperthreading on my i5 2500k. I know that intel lasers off cores, but HT isn't a physical  thing, it's just a manipulation of the cpu. So I was wondering if it can be done via a custom cpu microcode/bios hack.

I remember someone enabling HT on his 3570K via some sort of modded microcode/bios but that was all I heard so I dont think its possible.

I'd guess you be more likely to brick some components when trying it.

It can be tested for reference with celerons and inexpensive motherboards. (I'm talking about lga 1156 and later of course)

People studied closely both dies and found no physical difference, that's why im so interested into this topic

Intel could have used lasers to cut off the hardware on the cpu that enables HT, making it impossible to enable.

I remeber somewhere(don't remeber if this for GPU's or CPU's)

They make a batch of chips that are all the same,the perfect ones become i7 and ones with defects turn into i5's or i3's

HyperThreading requires certain registers to have a duplicated set in order to maintain two separate thread states. And it's likely Intel cut those out, among other things, to disable HyperThreading.

That's also part of it. Dies with defects in places that allow them to be made into a lower end product become the lower end products, though sometimes I believe Intel has to sell dies that are capable of more as i3s and i5s due to demand.

I'm not familiar enough with what's required to get HT working to properly answer that: However, you definitely do need some extra hardware on the CPU (I'd imagine there's be extra stuff in the scheduler, for example) to get it working, so just cut that off and it won't be able to work.

The microcode will not allow it as it checks the state of some fuses on the CPU which are blown to disable HT.

 

"what about modifying the microcode" you ask?  Its encrypted, good luck.
