Video editing computer help

I am working on building my first computer. I want to be able to easily edit 1080p footage in Premiere Pro. I am looking for an external GPU but don't really care about the export time but need fast timeline scrubbing/overall seamless editing experience. I was wondering if the i78700k overclocked is a good CPU for what I am trying to do. I was also wondering if THE GPU helps while editing videos or if it only helps when exporting. Could you recommend a GPU for this? the last thing was the RAM. Currently, I plan on using 2 x 8bg of DDR4 3200 memory. I know Premiere works better with more memory but do I need more than 16gb? Thanks

You need lots of Cores, RAM, and preferably a powerful GPU. I would take a look at the AMD lineup since they tend to have more slower cores, which is easier on the budget and faster for editing, 32GB of RAM is heavily recommended, and I would recommend at least a 1060 preferably a 1070 or better on the GPU end of things.

I will look into AMD CPU's but in Intel's lineup is eight cores enough? I was looking at the i75820k or the 7820x.

There are CPU in the Intel lineup that have 8 cores, but they are more expensive than the 1700x from AMD with 8 cores, of course Intel does have better single threaded performance.

In Premiere Pro anything past 8 cores has diminishing returns. I still would look at thread ripper as it has 64 PCIE lanes so you can use many high speed drives as you will notice a difference between an 850 EVO SATA drive and a 960 EVO M.2 Drive in video editing. Also 32gbs is a good starting point and the more CUDA cores the better so I would say a 1080 and up or a 980ti. If you are using OpenGL AMD wipes the floor and Fury X or AMDs compute lineup is great

Not need per se, but if you like to keep photoshop and other Adobe programs in background to quick fix some scene or asset, you may find it uncomfortable (all the closing and opening).

Quick topics:

Fast import, timeline, and exports= SSD suggested.

Lots of background programs = 32GB RAM suggested

Fast timeline= GPU accelerated codecs. (less price but wiked fast, Pascal GPUs support h264, h265 decode up to 4k, starting with 1050Ti)

 

Its highly important you adapt your timeline to your hardware. If you import poo formats with an amazing rig that cant GPU decode, it will be slow.  LinusTechTips does this exact same thing, they found their best suited codec and stick to it.
