Multiple (different) GPUs?

Go to solution Solved by trag1c,

If you do computational work then it's great to have 2 cards. I have a 1080 and a 980 for 3d rendering and cad work to speed up my workflow. But for gaming there's no hope in hell. Technically d3d12 can use 2 different cards but that's few and far between for support and it may actually harm performance if the performance difference of the cards is substantial. E.g. my setup or your setup.

Hi.

I just recently ordered a new Geforce GTX 1060 with 6GB of VRAM as an Upgrade for my old Geforce GTX 960 with 2GB of VRAM, an Upgrade that was really needed. Now the card is supposed to arrive today, so i was thinking about what to do with my old card.

I checked the Nvidia compatibility list for SLI and had to see that the 1060 isn't supporting SLI. So i was kinda wondering if there way any other way to make use of the second (old) GPU at all or if i am best of just taking it out.

Thanks in advance c:

I think you would be better off taking it out of your system, According to some stories you can have both in the system at the same time but gain no real performance from it since they cant run in Sli mode at all... you can probably recoup a nice ammount of cash for the 960 due to the prices these days ;)

For gaming no, but some stuff like CUDA rendering (ie CADD or video rendering) or crypto-mining will utilize the second card fully.

Gaming - Ryzen 9800X3D | 64GB 6400mhz cl30 9070 XT

Homelab - many servers...constantly changing.

3970X/256GB - 5950X/128GB ECC - 5600G/96GB - 3400GE/16GB - 3400GE/16GB

If all you are doing is gaming then I personally would recommend selling the card to recoup some of the cost of upgrading to a 1080.
