Some of us are looking to replace an old Del (that runs Windows XP) as a Christmas gift, someone found:  http://www.amazon.com/M11AD-US006S-Genertation-i3-4130T-Desktop-Graphic/dp/B00EOGGV3G . . . .. Wondering how cheaply we could build a computer:

  • May run Windows XP (parents would want to run programs like Sidekick and some other office programs besides MS office 2007 (or later)
  • Could run Windows 7 Home Premium (which we do have)
  • Mostly used for browsing the internet, watching youtube. Perhaps one of my parents may use it for some work - Word, Powerpoint
  • I don't think we'd need a separate GPU (if possible with integrated)
  • Less than $500 I'd probably think.

Had a few thoughts for builds:

The cpu cooler on that second rig is completely unnecessary

Don't know where I came up with the parts in those builds, anyway I just put together this:  http://pcpartpicker.com/user/dlf/saved/3aQC.  That's much cheaper than the amazon link, the CPU comes with a intergrated GPU, so no need for a discrete card. We could just put Windows 7 (or XP) on a thumb drive to install) - no need for an optical drive. 8 GB of RAM should be overkill for the needs as well as that powersupply.

Also just emailed these links:

I would recommend a better case, only because the way technology is going, in a couple of years parts will be cheaper, better and will probably be needed for future programmes. Just a thought

Something like this should do the trick (adjust storage and OS as needed).

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2m6Os

i5-3570k @ 4.4ghz (1.240v) || Asrock extreme 4 || CM Hyper 212 evo

Samsung 840 || WD blue 1tb || WD green 1tb || Powercolor 7870 xt @ (1200 mhz core : 1500 mhz mem)

Powered by a silverstone strider 500w psu in a NZXT 210.

Don't use XP, it's losing support in April 2014. SO NO SECURITY PATCHES AFTER IT LOSES SUPPORT. Very bad.

Get an APU

Buy a cheap case that's decent enough to build in

Get a 300 Watt PSU

Decent mobo

500GB HDD

That should be good enough.

Edit: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2maW8

Mobo: Z97 MSI Gaming 7 / CPU: i5-4690k@4.5GHz 1.23v / GPU: EVGA GTX 1070 / RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz@CL9 1.5v / PSU: Corsair CX500M / Case: NZXT 410 / Monitor: 1080p IPS Acer R240HY bidx

Gone with http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EOGGV3G, one quick thing, I doubt but at some point if I get 16 or 32 GB of RAM, could we take the current 8 GB (or at lest one stick) and put in the new system if need be. RAM Is RAM, my system and that one we got both use DDR3 memory so it should be compatible I'd think. I'd doubt a terabyte drive would be used, probably at most 100 GB I'd think.

Then you could've gone with something like my build which would be faster and cheaper..  http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2nXq6
