Hi all,

I'm new to this, so apologies if this topic already exists.

I'm researching to build a home server, mostly to act as a media server. In the future it might become a productivity server as well.

I would run unraid with a number of undefined HDD's.

I'm a SFF freak, so looking to Micro-ATX solutions.

I'm leaning more to ryzen as those chips support ECC ram, although not officially.

I did not yet decide which parts i would use.

I'm considering the ASUS Prime B350M-A motherboard with a ryzen 5 1600x. But my main concern here is 24/7 operation.

Although the server won't be accessed continuously it will still be turned on all the time.

Are those mobo's up for it to act as a server? Or should i start looking to threadripper/xeon for this?

I noticed Asrock announced the X399M at CES. But i think this might be pretty overkill.

should work fine with unraid, but dont expect pcie passthrough without a lt of work.

i wouldnt bother with ecc for a home server.

id get a non x to save some money and power, or get a 2400g, you really dont need the cpu for you listed uses.

you also need a gpu normally.

what do you mean by productivity server? if you want a vm host unraid isnt great.
