I got the 8700k this year and I was wondering if it's supposed to be so hot. it idles at like 40c and overheats under an aida64 load to 20 percent. I'm sure it's not my cooling because I have an ek fluidgaming 240g and i reapplied thermal paste a couple times and remounted it a couple times. I have an Asus motherboard and it's not overclocked

It needs to be delidded. But it's weird it's happening even on stock. Maybe you just got a real bad chip.

Buy rockit 88 and you can use code 'PCMR5' to save $5 off.

is it a high chance after deliding the cpu will break

not really lol. that's why there are tools for it. it's basically impossible to break  it unless you intentionally go and try to do it.

People automatically always recommend delidding when it comes to 8700K.

Without overclocking, the chip shouldn't run this hot, period, even without delidding. Especially idling at 40C, something isn't right. What case do you have? Many cases have bad airflow. The radiator may not get enough air. Just a suggestion.

I did a 6700k delid with just a blade and patience...socket cover holds the IHS back on and all good. It really is not that hard just don't brute force it and be careful... using the tools online would not hurt either :P. If you use liquid metal thermal paste be very careful. I did and all was good in the end but it dripped on the board and made a split second sizzle and then was all good but scary it was indeed. If you were delidding a soldered IHS then I would say super risky but at this point a delid is not hard.

My CPU used to overheat like 40C idle and 85C under load, reapplied paste 3 times and I was about to get a delid kit but adding 4 small rubber washers between the mobo and the cooler's backplate and that dropped temps from 85 to 64 or less under load

point is, just try simple solutions before ordering stuff

ASUS X470-PRO • R7 1700 4GHz • Corsair H110i GT P/P • 2x MSI RX 480 8G • Corsair DP 2x8 @3466 • EVGA 750 G2 • Corsair 730T • Crucial MX500 250GB • WD 4TB
