Only getting ~2mb/s down, but paying for 30mbs?

In my area there is only 1 network provider. They can charge what ever they want, since they are the only service provider.

 

I have a 30 megabytes per second download plan with them, but on all the connected devices in my house we are getting only up to 2mbps (1.8mbps avg).

 

I have tried changing many settings in my router software(https://192.168.1.1/) to get faster speed and nothing has helped.

 

Something very weird is that when I do an online internet speed test, it usually shows about 17mbps, but whenever I download something its only gone up to 2mbps??

Downloading from where? Some programs display in MegaBYTES

Download speeds by providers are sold and advertised in MegaBITS per second

1 Megabyte = 8 Megabits

Are you using a wired connection? Also, when downloading something you won’t always get your maximum speed because the server you’re downloading from may be slower.

Have u looked in modem\router settings to see what actual speed u r getting?

no devices/computers in my house use ethernet cable connections, all wireless

Yes, the capitalization or lack thereof denotes the difference, of course there are some providers who just capitalize the whole damn thing even though they mean megabits.

MBps = Megabytes

Mbps = Megabits

Did want to expand on the above a bit. Even though you're getting more than you think, you're still not getting the full 40Mbps you should be so I would call your ISP and complain that something isn't right since you're paying for more than you get, by a good bit. If it was within a couple Mbps then I wouldn't bother but getting half of what you should isn't acceptable. I would try disabling all other wireless devices and get within 10 feet of the router and retest and see, if nothing changes then give them a call.

 

 

For anyone who is interested why Mbps and MBps is different and why it's sold in Mbps is because information is transmitted in bits, 1s or 0s, however the smallest amount of information that can be stored is 8 bits or 1 byte.

even my iphone gives a faster speed than that in speedtest. I'm paying for 150 MB/sec and I get around 130 give or take. In downloads it says around 15.5 M/sec I pay like 64.99 a month.

What modem\router do u have?
